I'm upgrading to XP Home from Win 98SE, and the problem occured at the beginning of the installation process, after it checked the web for any updates. It's like the following:

"Setup cannot copy E:\I386\mfc42.dll to C:\WINDOWS\Setup\mfc42.dll", and then "Setup cannot copy E:\I386\migisol.exe to C:\WINDOWS\Setup\migisol.exe", and finally "Setup cannot continue. Contact Microsoft Technical Support. (Error 578FF58h)"

Anyone know what is the problem? Thanks a lot for any help.

Patrick

Had a similar problem. Try this.
Make a directory on your harddrive and copy the installation CD to it. The run SETUP from the hard drive.

Hi

I also had a similar problem once XP got to the windows install part and said 'copying files'. Stopped because it could not copy files from the i386 directory on the CD. ( the CD is perfectly readable though )

I made an i386 directory on my HD and copied all the files from the same dir on the CD to it.

No problems then.......

I've tried switching the BIOS UDMA option to "PIO", "standard", and "off", but no luck. I've also tried copied the whole CD to the hard drive, then run "Setup.exe" but still had the same error message.

If anyone has any suggestion, please post a reply. Thanks a lot for any help.

Patrick

I had the same problem with 2 different Windows XP Disks. I was trying to do a clean install of XP. I found that the the cd's were fine. I found a Windows XP Boot Disk from Microsoft and after that I did not have any problems.

You can get the boot disk at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33291

You will need 6 3 1/2 Disk to create the boot disk.

Good Luck!
Please let me know if this helps anyone.
