I am trying to install Windows XP to a USB Harddrive. I am using an Intel 845BG motherboard which supports USB Boot devices. Windows XP gives me an error says the BIOS cannot detect that drive at bootup. Is there any way to get aruond this?

My bios supports USB also but only for a removable device like CD-ROM, ZIP, etc. Check that your bios really supports USB "Mass Storage Devices"!

To install XP onto your USB Hard Drive you will need to load your USB drivers during the installation. The installation CD does not have USB drivers. Don't bother if your USB drive isn't USB 2.0. With USB 1.0 you will get only 12 MB trough put (realisticly maybe more like 4 MB) USB 2.0 will give you 480MB /min. With USB 1.0 be prepared to wait for a few hours. In my opinion wast of time. However, I don't know what you want to archive by installing it onto your USB drive. I am running a product called VMWARE, which is basically simulating a Virtual PC. With VMWARE I can run any OS form any Drive I want including USB or Firewire. Check it out on www.vmware.com

Do you have another way that we could talk... like AIM or something.. Also, where would I find those drivers, can I get them online somewhere?

You should get your USB drivers from your supplier. I have several external USB / Firewire Drives and they use drivers from the website below. You could give it a go. By the way, why do you want to boot from USB anyway?

Currently I carry my computer with me to work each day, and wish to use the USB drive to boot my work machine into Windows XP with my own stuff instead of what is preinstalled on the machine. My work frowns on programs that write all over the system directory such as games, and programs that aren't neccessary to the everyday movement of my job

Thank you for all your help, except I have yet one other question.. Windows XP is asking for a txtsetup.oem file, what do I do since there isn't one with the download.

Check out VMWARE it's the best thing on the market. I have my entire home PC on Vmware running parallel to my works O/S running on my USB drive. Go to the website. Download the trial version. If you need help in setting it up let me know. Once you are happy with it and want the real thing we will talk again.

OKAY.. I've tried out VMWARE... except from what I've noticed, I need to install that on my work machine, correct? If that's the case... that will not work.

You only need to install VMWARE on your Work PC, not the OS. The OS you leave on your USB Drive.

That's what I can't do.... the only software they want installed is their own installations... that's why I'm trying to get the USB drive to be bootable.. Thanks for your help tho
Anybody else have any other ideas?
