I would like to install xp on a usb drive so that I can boot from that drive to play games/run CPU intensive music software. I don't have enough space on my internal hard drive to partition it. Is this possible?

Could I run a workaround where I boot off CD and install some software from the usb drive each time I boot? Bit of a pain.
I suppose the only alternative is to buy a bigger laptop hard drive...

This will not work, and even if you cobbled together a CD/USB Boot it would wear the USB Flash Drive out eventually due to the amount of read/writes it performs.
Would not consider a NAS Drive for storage ?

How about using a USB hard drive for storage of the games and music? Programs and games do not have to be installed on the C: drive.

Yeah, but then I still have an OS that is running lots of programs and using up memory.
I'd like a clean OS install to run games and memory intensive music software that I have. So, I could: 1. free up some space. Install XP to a 2nd partition, then install games onto the USB with this OS. 2. Get bigger hard drive. 3. Do something clever with a bootable OS. But the bootable OS won't save where the games are to a registry anywhere will it?
