Restore XP CD's usually only work with the system they came with. It is how the manufacturers save the cost of providing a full XP license from Microsoft. You can try it on your new machine, as there is nothing to loose. If it does not allow you to install it, you can then go to the store and buy a copy of XP.

As we say in the UK - Suck it and see. If it works fine, if it doesn't, you will have to buy one.
It wont be a problem from an activation point of view providing the SONY machine is defunct.
If the same copy is still running on the SONY machine you may have problems when you come to activate.
