Need help installing Windows XP Pro upgrade on a Sony Z505JE laptop running Windows 98SE without Sony CDROM drive. I would like a clean install. Tried using home network and Teac USB CD drive. No Luck. Can't get laptop to recognize the CD when I use the Dos, Windows 98 or XP startup disks. Sony web site indicates that the only way to install any bootable software is with their PCGA-CD51/A External PCMCIA CDROM (at least $130.00 on e-bay). Their has to be a workaround for this problem. But I can't seem to find it. Is their a feature built into the hardware or the bios that will not allow using other hardware or a network for the install? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You probably can get a MicroSolutions external CD-ROM that connects to the parallel port for a lot cheaper. On ebay I saw them for 40-50 dollars used. Make sure it comes with a power supply. Just do a search for MicroSolutions and go.
