OS: xp pro
CPU/Ram: 1700/512
Comment:

I Fdisked my hard drive, deleted all partitions and non DOS. I created a primary DOS partition , used max size and rebooted to A and formated C. I then went to install xp pro got to the screen if I want to keep the current file system (FAT 32) or partition to NTFS so I picked keep because I want FAT32. I then installed xp pro with no problems. Now however, at the startup screen I get a choice of boot to XP pro or Windows. If I click XP pro it boots fine. If I pick windows, 98 comes up for a second and sends me to C prompt. I don't want this dual boot or this 98 to come up at all. What did I do wrong and what can I change?

you should have formatted with the xp cd, but to get rid of it, you need to edit the boot.ini file. right click my computer, properties, advanced, under startup and recovery choose settings. under system startup choose edit. notepad will open and it will look something like this,

[boot loader]
timeout = 30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS = "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

except yours should have an extra line for "Microsoft Windows", you need to delete this extra line.

In addition, you'll have a file called 'bootsect.dos' in your root folder. This is copy of your MBR as was before you installed XP. You can delete it without harm.

You need to modify the 'boot.ini' file.

Open a command prompt
Copy the current c:\boot.ini to a floppy disk or different directory (just in case)
With your favorite text editor, edit c:\boot.ini

What you need it to look like is:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

At present you will have more than the one entry under Operating Systems: delete the Windows 98 entry, then save your changes.

You will now have this revised option every time you start XP and not be able to select a non-existent Windows 98 Operating System.

If XP is your default OS in the bootmenu then the only change you really need to make to the boot.ini file is to change timeout to 0 (Zero)

Should I just fdisk and reformat with the xp disk in? Should I just reformat with the xp disk in? I would rather just do it right?

Linda you should change first boot device in bios to cd rom and stick the cd in the drive and start the computer and when it asked if you want to boot to cd press any key do so. It doesnt display that but a second so you have to be watching. Once it boots to the xp cd choose new installation and it will give you format options.

Since you appear to have more than one partition for some reason I would first stick the 98 boot disk back in and run fdisk again and delete all partitions and dont recreate them. Then change first boot device to cd rom and proceed as described.

Thanks doc, I'll look again tonight when I get home. Yesterday tho, all I got was install in same partition and keep same or two other NTFS options so I took the keep the same that is why I got two operating systems upon bootup now.

If you want to try first to just delete the 98 boot menu then do this,

Click on start,settings,control panel,system properties,advanced tab,

Where it says edit the startup options file manually click edit. click on edit. Now there you should see under operating systems on line being xp and the other 98. Highlight and right click and choose cut on the 98 line only. And see if that achieves the desired affect.

I just read a bit of that myself and found something I had forgot. Skip the 98 boot disk and just delete all partitions when you are booted up with the xp cd then you can follow directions. You can do it all with the xp cd.

Linda,

Do you definitley have more than one partition? The way I read it you should only have one. If this is case, the responses from Myself and Nitti will work perfectly. In fact the result will be the same as reformatting with the XP tool. Save yourself the hassel!

You can choose which file system you want if you are talking about wiping and starting again with the xp cd. If you are talking about cutting the boot menu, that has nothing to do with channging the file system. If xp is on a fat file system then it still will be when you delete the 98 portion of the boot menu.
