Hi

Is it possible to install an application only ONCE, but run it on different Windows OS? For example, I want to install MS Office 2003 only ONCE, however, it should be able to run on Windows 98 or XP if I boot up into that Windows OS.

Thank you very much for any helps or opinions

I do not think installing once for a single OS (operating system) will work with all OS's on your computer. There are many registry entries created during the installation of Office. The way I usually handle this is to install in the same drive/folder from within the different OS's. Takes up less hard drive space.

Each OS will have it's own Registry. You'll have to reinstall the software on each OS you have.

You can put the installation in a common folder that is accessible from both Operating Systems and for Windows 98, that means FAT32.

Thank you very much guys. However, I still confuse Zenith and Stuart explanations. Both of you said that install in the "same folder"? So if I install MS Office 2003 to the folder, say, "c:\programs file\office" in Windows 98 and then I can also install MS Office to that folder again when I am in Windows XP? That mean it is ovewrited, right?

Thank you

Not neccessarily. There may be some settings changed if you have been using Windows in one OS already that deal with settings in *.ini files, but I do not believe it will delete any files.

Office relies on the Windows Registry quite alot so different users logging into a computer can set and retain thier individual settings, preferences, etc..

Yes, you can install in c:\ProgrammeFiles\Office. Files will be overwritten, but they will be overwritten with identical files.

All the OS specific information goes into the registry. Although there are some *.ini files used in Office XP they contain information that is common to all OSs.

Save yourself some time. Office 2003 only runs on 2000 or better and not 98.

Trick not mentioned here is you have a third partition of folder on a common drive you install office to for one OS. Boot the next OS and install office to Exactly the SAME location.

Now both boots have the same base files and registry entries but you are not using double the disk space for office.

Thank you all. I just pick Office 2003 as an exmple wanderer. I don't mean to use it with Windows 98.
