I am trying to use restore disks on a friends computer it will get about 2% and then tell me C:/I386/system32/catroot/dberr.txt and shut down.. so I get out my own xp and try to install it on the thing just to see if it would and so then I get cyclic redundancy check and she shuts down.. I have all ten restore disks for this computer brand new..I can boot up on 98 disk I have fdisked and formated whats the problem HELP PLZ

What did you fdisked? Did you kill the hidden partition required for the restore CDs to work?

The most common times you will see the cyclic redundancy check error message is when trying to read data from a damaged CD or DVD. Just before it appears, your CD/DVD drive will probably grind and whirl away - your PC may also become a little slugglish.
This is a very common problem with HP recovery disks.
If you have a DVD, try cleaning the disk real good and use the DVD.
If still no go, then the disk is probably bad.

Another thing...
HP must not have any devices installed except monitor keyboard and mouse when doing a recovery.
No printer, no ethernet cord, no usb devices etc.
