Hi
I have installed XP NTFS on C drive, D drive is FAT32. I want the system to have a boot menu so I can choose to boot to DOS or XP. Can I install dos on D drive and have it boot menu to choose XP or Dos, I read somewhere that I have to use my XP CD to do a recovery and I also have read somewhere I need to convert my C drive back to FAT32 which will loose all my data.
I want my final system to be NTFS for XP.Has any try this?
Thanks
Ken

First, No you do not HAVE to reformat your xp drive to FAT32, but keep in mind that if you choose not then DOS won't see it because it can't read NTFS.
Second, the easiest way to install dos is boot up with dos (that contains basic utilities like; format) and type:
FORMAT D:/q/s
This will do a fast format on D: and transfer dos system files and make it bootable.
Then reboot with xp and manually add dos to your boot.ini file.

I have XP on C drive and dos on D drive but when I boot up with dos it sees the d drive The drive IT is on) as C and the c drive as d. (reverse to xp)
In other words, it is important to put actual word labels to your drives so you don't get them mixed up.

Which DOS?
MSDOS6.22 must be totally within the first 8 GB of the drive and FAT16 2GB maximum.
MSDOS 7.1 or 8.0 will run on FAT32 partition, these versions are not well defined as they are part of Win9x/ME.
The partition DOS is installed on must be a primary partition (not a logical partition).
Best

If the XP C: Drive is NTFS, when you install 'MS-DOS6 or compatible like FreeDOS' it will complain that it can not install to C: as that where the boot files reside. Unless you have two seperate drives and disable the XP drive in the BIOS.
Surely it would be easier to install MS-DOS first then XP as recommended by M$ ?

I run dos 7.1 on my drive d.
7.1 works with fat32 and it is compatible with the older programs like windows 3.1 (which I run as well.)Dos will run on any partition... It just simply likes to CALL the partition it's on, the primary partition. Which is why I say it's important to WORD label your drives so you don't get them mixed up. When running XP c drive will be C. When running Dos, drive D will be CALLED drive C.

I was thinking of formating the D partition with Dos and system. But I am afraid after I do that, and restart the machine, XP will not boot off anymore.
WIll this Happen..?

Sorry I think I didn't mentioned that it's on 1 physical HD with partition C for XP (NTFS) and Partition D as Fat 32. I think if I format D drive with system, XP won't boot up, even if I edit the boot.ini file before I format the D drive.

Reason is just want to boot from DOs and run imaging software such as ghost, rather than me putting a bootable floppy disc in, we have lots of machines in a lab.

Don't worry about XP not starting. Your bois is and always has been trained to go to C on startup. Dos will not be an issue until and unless you have a boot manager installed, pointing the boot at the dos partition.
