inspiron 530 blackout

Specs: Windows XP
I have an inspiron desktop 530 with xp and the sceen keeps blacking out with (cannot display this video mode) written across the middle of the screen the only way to get going again is to switch off at the mains and restart consequently loosing all my work, very annoying

it normally happens when I am using the pc for normal work, word, excel or something and suddenly black screen and have to swich off at mains to restart losing all my work as there is not a regular pattern it catches me out

mmm two things come to mind...

One is that you may be driving (ar setting) the display too high for the monitor...; too high resolution or to high a refresh rate. And that "can" on ocasion produce the effects you're getting...

Perhaps reduce resolution slightly; and/or refresh rates... and see how it goeth?

Second is that graphics-card may be faulty...

As it happens only in "normal" mode... I'm more inclined to the first posibility. Unless if you work for a while in safe-mode (i.e. leave it for a while with suitable info etc. on the display) it then occurs there too... Should that be the case then I'd be looking at the graphics card...; or its on-board RAM etc...
