I recently replaced my aged DVD burner with an LG4120. It is the master on my secondary IDE channel with a DVD-ROM connected as slave.
Since installing this every time a put a CD or DVD into it, even a blank, XP instantly reboots, no warning or message, no BSOD, simply bang, just as if I'd lost power or pressed the reset button.
I've lived with this for a while because holding down shift when inserting does prevent the problem and I can generally remember to do this but my dear wife, bless her, ALWAYS forgets resulting in inevitable grief for me!
Autorun is turned off and I have tried swapping master/slave to no avail.
If I put the old drive back all is OK.
Tried removing the IDE controllers in Device Manager and letting XP reinstall them again but no joy.
Anybody come across this or know a solution.

my poor opinion is this:
i would go to the store and change the new dvd dr for another one come back install and see what happens.
2. if the 1 doesn't work ill check for viruses.
3. if #1 &2 don't work i would reinstall windows. whatever version you using.
greeetings and good luck.

Are the jumpers on both drives set correctly? Does each drive show in its corresponding place in the bios? Do you see any yellow marks in device manager on either of these drives?

All opinions welcome, poor or otherwise !
I hear what you say but I honestly don't believe there is anything actually wrong with it.
I have dual boot setup With 98 which I rarely use but it works fine with that, sorry I didn't mention it.
Also I am 100% confident that I am virus free.
I did experience this same phenomenon with Win98 some years ago and it was to do with which version of a file called scsi1hlp.vxd you had installed, I wondered if something similar maybe existed in XP.

Do you think your power supply is giving you enough juice? Try unhooking your other DVD drive (the slave, the non-burner drive) and try that. If not, it's got to be the jumper settings or a bad drive... or just another episode of the Twilight Zone.

check device manager for proper recognition and if necessary remove and let windows load again, load latest driver, go to microsoft and load and run autoplay repair wizard
Do not reinstall windows this is not your problem

Thanks for the comments folks:
doc - jumpers are correct and there are no exclamation marks in DM, I would have said.
Tom529 - There seems to be a widespread misconception that CD-ROM's and the like require 3rd party drivers to work in XP, to the best of my knowledge and experience they do not.
To digress for a moment, and I'm willing to be shot down in flames here, if anyone can point me to any manufacturers site carrying a specific driver required for an optical device to fundamentally work in XP then I'll happily eat humble pie. Yes, certain programmes may need patches for new devices and of coures there are firmware upgrades but basic drivers to work in XP, no.
Ray Chill - if it works OK under 98 then it's very unlikely to be a power problem besides which it's a 425w job driving but a lowly 2200+AMD and with no hungry mega graphics card to feed (I don't play games) I think that's more than adequate. And ultimately, other than the crashing problem it reads, plays DVD's and burns faultlessly.
mackphaeder - ditto my reply to doc. Must admit I've not heard of the autorepair repair wizard so I'll go and find it and give it a whirl. Do you have a link to it?
Bills pages are not always the easiest to find stuff on...lol
Thanks again for all the good feedback.

We cant assume what you would say or not say when replying. We only go by what you say! As for drivers for cd drives or dvd drives there are often drivers available for them as well as firmware updates. Heres one example,
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&tool=softwareCategory&lc=en&product=57620&cc=us&dest_page=softwareCategory&os=228#
But you are correct, windows should run this drive with the embedded driver.

Agreed but then I did write....
"Tried removing the IDE controllers in Device Manager and letting XP reinstall them again but no joy".
If I'd had exclamation marks it would have reasonable to expect me to have said so, also, where do you stop when composing a post ?
Re the drivers at your link, these are HP applications and utilities and not fundamental so no 'umble pie yet...lol

No NO NO, the link contains a cd that has what does it say, (driver). The controller is not the drive! The ide controller and the drive are two differant componets!

Go down to the first device under drivers,

Yes Yes Yes.....The HP page may well say "Software and Driver Installation CD" but it doesn't specify for what and the site then goes on to say,
"The driver needed for HP IDE devices to function as readers is supplied with the operating system. The Windows XP IDE driver allows the operating system to detect the HP CD-Writer hardware and allows the drive to function as a CD reader. However, Windows XP compatible CD writing software is needed for the drive to function as a writer."
Any drivers on the Cd in question will probably be for 9x/NT/other OS's etc.
Your Sony link is to a firmware update for the drive so not what we're talking about.
I'm well aware of the difference between a controller and a drive by the way !
Anyhow, I think I've solved the problem and it turns out to be a bit of a "Twilight Zone" job as Ray Chill in response #5 suggested.
I have a USB2 external HD for backups/images etc. which is normally left plugged in and powered up/down as required but on occasion I do forget to switch it off which means it is on at boot time and it seems to be this fact causing the problem.
Had I not got into the habit of holding SHIFT when inserting a CD I may have associated this with the crashing sooner but there you go !
Quite why an external USB device should have this bizarre effect is a total mystery and it had never occured to me that, irrespective of whether it was powered on or off, this could be in any way related to my problem. Plus of course it was never a problem before the new drive was installed, which all just goes to show that when it comes to PC problems ASSUME NOTHING...lol
Thanks to everyone for all your help and suggestions.
Fade out to the music from "The Twilight Zone" dodododo-dodododo............
