I am still trying to format the hard drive. I got an A: prompt using an xp boot disk. Now I cannot do anything. I have tried using a win98 (and win98se) boot disk from bootdisk.com. All I get is "incorrect MS-DOS version when I try to run fdisk. I currently have WinXP Pro on the computer (twice, actually. I need to reformat to get everything back to normal.) I previously had Win98se. Please help me erase this darn drive! Thank you in advance all you smart computer people!

Get a Win98 bootdisk from here,

http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml

That's where I got mine and fdisk works fine.

Forgot to mention in my first post. Make sure your trying to run fdisk from the a: prompt and not the c: prompt. That can cause the incorrect MSDOS version error.

Hope this helps,
Sandman

Sandman, I downloaded that boot disk, and I still get the incorrect ms dos error. I don't know what to do next. How can I tell what version of DOS I have on the computer? I would boot from the Windows XP CD, but that doesn't work either. When I did the advanced install to reformat the HD, all it did was put another win xp on the computer. Now I have it twice. It would not let me erase the partition or reformat the drive. Maybe I just need to take the darn thing in.

To be honest I don't remember how to find out what version of dos is on a pc, but that doesn't matter cause there is no dos on Xp. But that doesn't matter either :)

When you get to the a: prompt type

a:\fdisk.exe

and see if that works.

I tried a:/fdisk.exe, and it still told me I had the incorrect ms-dos version. what can I do? I just retried the xp install, and I still cannot delete my partition (my only one) because "setup files that windows needs to install are saved on this partition" or something like that. any ideas?

Do you have an Xp cd or are the setup files on your harrdrive? If it's on the harddrive don't format it cause you won't have anything to install from.

I don't know why your getting that error though, I use it and it works. Make sure you do a full format on the bootdisk before you run the Win98 bootdisk creator.

Sandman,
This probably doesn't have to do with the problem kamisaki is having but he only has 64mb of ram

Xp will install with 64 megs but I'm glad you pointed that out. I still forget that theirs system specs on the pages now. But alas I've ran fdisk on a pc with four megs of ram :( LOL

Kamisaki, what speed processor do you have? If at all possible you really need to update your ram to at least 128 megs. Xp will run a whole lot better with more ram.

I think I will update the RAM. I am not certain what my processor speed is. I have the windows xp pro CD. So is there a way to delete the partition and bypass the error about the setup/install files being on the partition? I also did a full format on the floppy before making a boot disk. Who knows? I am about ready to throw the whole thing in the rubbish and start anew. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Otherwise, thanks for all your help.

I don't mean to butt in here but this might help. This happened to a friend of mine a while back. Sometimes fdisk won't work on some non-dos partitions. The NTFS file system can be stubborn at times. May I suggust to go Here and download "delpart" then add it to any 9x floppy. Boot your computer with the floppy in the drive and when it comes to the prompt type in a:\delpart.exe. After delpart removes NTFS reboot and run fdisk to recreate your partitions.

Regards

I tried to boot from the floppy. I got the a:/ prompt, but it still won't run fdisk. I didn't use the command prompt from within xp. I will try what Smokey said. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks everyone.
