My wife had a problem with her computer and instead of waiting for me to look at it, our daughter took over and seems to have messed things up. When I sign up with my wife's account, any thing she does happens under documents and settings\fani, which happens to be my daughters name. Fani doesn't even have an account on the computer. Letty, my wife has an account but shows nothing with her name under documents and settings. What did my daughter do?

I would start by seeing if you have any valid system restore points just prior to when your wife experienced problems & do a system restore. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

fani is the name of the profile and would only be there if an account named "fani" had logged into the computer.
Your wife's account would have it's own profile.
Here's what could have happened: your daughter might have logged in with Admin privileges, created an account named fani, deleted your wife's account, logged in with the fani account, then renamed it to Letty. That way, when Letty logs in using what she believes was her "old" account, she's actually logging into the newly created and renamed fani account.
If there's no Documents and Settings\Letty, then that profile folder (and any documents therein) are gone, unless they are in the Recycle Bin.
A System Restore may restore the profile. Doesn't hurt to try.
Just a suggestion; create separate data folders for your family members and put those folders on a separate partition if you have one. If not, create them under C, and redirect My Documents for each user to the proper folder, keeping data completely separate from the profiles.

Jennifer,
I think you hit the nail right on the head. I recall now that the problem was that my wife could not figure out how to make a picture she had be her walpapaer. My guess is the Fani said well my account has it and since I don't use it anymore, she simply renamed the account name from Fani to Letty and told her her mother to use it.
What I have already done is rename the account back to Fani and change the picture. I am now going to create a new account called Letty, copy over all the files my wife wants and then delete the Fani account. Thanks for everyone's help.

Well now I created the account called Letty and it created 2 directories under documents and settings. One called Letty and one called Letty.MOONLGHT. MOONLIGHT is the name of the machine. Why would it do this?

If I look at the shell folders inthe registry they indeed point to the Letty.MOONLIGHT directories. The only director under Letty is Local Settings. If there is no easy fix maybe I can copy the irectories to Letty and then update the shell folders in the registry.

Each account creates it's own profile. An original account creates a profile. Renaming it uses that same profile regardless of the account name.
Creating a new account with the old account name will NOT use that same profile folder. It creates a new one. This is normal behavior.
The only way to fix it so that the user name and profile are the same is to move the documents from each profile (if there are any) then rename each profile to .old or .bad. Then, when fani and Letty login, a new profile will be created for each account.
I still recommend storing the data files separate from the profile.

btw Jenn...I agree with you. I have long told people to keep their data in a completely seperate directory, preferrably on a different drive. You can alway reinstall windows, but you can't reinstall your data. However they don't alway listen.

The new profile was created. Because that profile name already exists, the machine name was tacked onto the end of the new one.

Thanks Jennifer,
After creating the account I deleted it and then recreated it an now everything is fine.
