Hi

I came across this on the web. Is there any merit in it?

I have a laptop with 2GB of memory most of which seems to be unused according to Task Manager. Would I notice any difference if I were to apply it? More to the point would I do any harm? Has anyone done it?

Improve Core System Performance (Windows NT/2000/XP)

On systems with large amount of RAM this tweak can be enabled to force the core Windows system to be kept in memory and not paged to disk.

Open your registry and find the value in the key below.

Change the value to '1' enable the tweak and stop the core process from being paged, or set it to '0' for the default.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This tweak may effect some software that relies directly on the Windows swap file such as Adobe Photoshop.

(Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
DisablePagingExecutive REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session ...

Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management]
Value Name: DisablePagingExecutive
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = default, 1 = disable system paging)

Thanks for your advice.

Where did you find this tweak? Seems to me as if it's disabling the Page File and not allowing a System managed size either. I wouldn't do it.

Did you try it? You could always reverse the changes.

Give it a try but do a full Registry Backup first.

If you are taking the time to look in Task Manager you obviously aren't using much of your System resources so Memory usage will be low.

If you wish to observe resource usage in real-time go to MS and download SysInternals Process explorer. You cang Graphically observe CPU, Ram, etc. while Applications are running.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Search the web for a program called "Ram Idle".
Many places to download free.
It displays current free RAM in the System Tray.
Also you can right click the icon to free up any
amount of RAM.
I use a Beta version I got some years ago, and
has a Memory Usage of 2,888k.

Computer Speed and Performance May Decrease

When you open, then close programs,
programs may not free up RAM memory.
That is called "Memory Leak".
Restarting computer will clear out its RAM memory.

RAM optimizers are a waste of time just as this tweak is. See here

Commander the OS and programs you run will use ram according to their needs and as the OS allows.

Example of Oxymoron:
Person who is pro life and anti sex education.
Education is key to prevention. Prevent conception you prevent abortion. Abstinence training clearly isn't working.
