Im here cuz im in dire need of some help.A good friend and lover, mite have sent me a keylogger from a jpeg.We have been talking about moving in with ech other for 7 months, everyday almost, and its a 5000 mile trip for me and i have been saving up to move in with her.Well she sent me a strange picture, then asked me to open it up in EI.I feel like garbage right now that she mite have done this, and i trust her like no one else.I have been told from a site that.

The most recent problem is with Jpeg images containing them (keylogger)and then getting downloaded onto IE.That make me wonder why she asked me to open it in EI to inlarge it she said. She has neevr asked me to do this before.I have run a few programs looking for the keylogger, and nothing. She is a webmaster and knows alot about computer.I still have the picture on my harddrive,is there any place i can send it to for someone to see if it has a keylogger? This pains me alot,to think that she would do this and that fact that i am doubtin her.Or is there anyway to find out

"IF" you are not set to show file extensions then you cannot be certain it is a .jpg at all. There could be another extension after the name (.jpg being part of the file name).

Why do you think you have a keylogger?

Assuming you have, then you should run your virus checker and malware finders such as Ad-Aware (free).

This free trojan finder/fixer would be worth running too:

A2FREE - JUST DOWN PAGE

MS AntiSpyware beta is another useful tool.

Derek...

Ap's writeup reminds me of the buffer overrun in JPEG processing (GDI+) that could allow code execution - remember it?

If it is a keylogger or other infected file, the sender just might be an innocent victim as much as you. This kind of thing tends to propogate itself via the addressbook of any computer it manages to infect. If in doubt about any email attachments you can always phone the sender before opening it to verify the source.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Is that the one where it affects a whole stack of different programs, which you have to test for?

I ask again, why do you think you have a keylogger (apart from your imagination)? Is your machine behaving any differently at all? Did you try my link?

Derek, Your link for MS Anti Spyware Beta is a link for Spyware Doctor, not MS. I didn't know if you knew this.

Grasshopper,

Derek's link is not a link. It is the Ad-sense function of Computing.net. Take note of the double underline on the so called link. Same as in your post.

I too am with Derek wanting to know what makes you think that a keylogger is present.

There are many Key Logger Detector programs available.

Yeah, liked your link - more focussed on the problem (well, the possible computer one anyway).

Easy mistake, I've been known to click on the odd one. My links are always blue and in caps (doesn't help tho unless you happen to know).

Thanks everyone,i will try the links bryco. And why do i think i mite have a keylogger.Well considering we are both going to be making a big step in are lifes,She mite want to see what im up too,on my computer maybe she double checking to see if im for real, maybe she thinks i am fake or something like that, and i mite talk about these with other girls, maybe she think im just flirting and not serious.I just find it weird that she send me a pic that ment nothing, then asked me to open it in EI to see it enlarged. When i was told that a problem is with Jpeg images containing (keylogger)and then getting downloaded onto IE,And i figger thats why she asked me to open it in ei.Is it normal to ask someone to open a picture in EI to inlarge it?Can opening a picture in EI do anything nasty?Comparded to using windows picture and fax viewer, that is what i use to look at pictures.

Keyloggers are put on machines by expert hackers and you generally get them off the internet.

Unless she is some sort of computer egg head then there is no chance that she could monitor your machine from hers. Most likely she just thought IE was the right/best place to view it.

In short, I don't really believe it. Try the link in #7 and other programs suggested if you want to be certain. Otherwise get yourself a firewall and stop worrying.

If you really think that you have a keylogger, then I hope all these posting are being done from a computer other than the "infected" system else the entire point of trust becomes moot. If you have up to date Anti Virus and Adware/Spyware detectors and they found nothing then you are more likely than not in the clear. As for why she sent you an irrelevant picture...ask her, after all you are considering moveing 5K miles to live with her right?

Best of luck

As noted earlier, the possiblity exits that she didn't actually send you the image. It could have been a spoofed email address making you think that it came from her.

It would make it simple to ask her something to the effect of "I got that image from you; what is it about. I did't understand."
She will either explain or deny sending it. Then you will have a topic for discussion. You mentioned that she knows computers.
"She is a webmaster and knows alot about computer.I still have the picture on my harddrive,is there any place i can send it to for someone to see if it has a keylogger?"

What was the image of anyway? Was it something related to discussions you two had or is it more likely that she did not send it to you?

Perhaps I will provide my email address so you can send it to me.

Hi Derek,

Yes it is (MS04-028 Buffer overrun in JPEG processing). I don't believe Ap's problem has anything to do with it.

Thx for the reminder. I did look at it at the time (for W98SE) but it seemed that most of my programs were too old to be affected - though that assumption could have been wrong.

I have many methods to keep safe and take great care on the internet and with email. My last problem was Happy 99 (no big issue), in the days when opening any email attachments was the about the norm. Let's hope I continue to keep clear.
