I'm getting a fatal error message when I reinstall

July 17, 2012 at 15:55:43
Specs: Windows 7
The message I get is SXS.DLL: syntax error or policy file "D:\1386\asms\10100\MSFT\Windows\GDIPLUS.MAN" on line 4.
This happens after the 1st reboot.
TheError says Installation Failed: D\1386\asms. A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest. Is there a way to fix this?
I am not very computer literate so I need a step by step answer.

Start the install again, make sure you delete all partitions ( you lose everything ) & then format to NTFS.

On the first reboot, DON"T touch any key.

Hi Gerrid,

I am Jamal M from Dell Social Media and Communities team,

>>Start the installation,
>> While on the disk partition screen format using NTFS regular [Not NTFS QUICK]
>>This should take a long time, as it’s a regular FORMAT process.
>> Continue with the normal installation process.
>> You should be good to go.

Please keep us updated regarding the issue.

Thanks, JohnW. I deleted everything and started over using the NSF file. Now I am getting a message that says "the file hlink.dll was not copied correctly. The file Setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid Windows XP system image". My problems started with a virus or malware. Could that have corrupted everything?

" Could that have corrupted everything?"

Exactly, that is why you must delete ALL partitions.

Highlight each partition & Delete will become available.

Thanks, JohnW. I think I'm giving up on this as a lost cause. I started with a brand new had drive. I've also deleted all the partitians several times. I even tried a different CD Rom drive and 2 different installation discs, and nothing is working. Thanks for your help, tho.
