Comment: Hi I got a new mobile phone and I need to connect it to my computer using infrared. The mobile has infrared pre-installed but I don't think my old Dell 400 Pentium II workstation has infrared technology. Infrared is not listed my Device Manager but I read that the BIOS can be checked to see if it has infrared and if so, could be given the option to turn it on or off in the BIOS. Does anyone know if Dell 400's have infrared? or whether infrared could be enabled in the BIOS providing the BIOS chip has it? Thanks Danny1234

Reply: Support to connect an infrared device has been built into most desktop mboards for a long, long time, at least since the early 90's. The pins for it (5 in a row, the second pin can be missing) are usually in the front panel header or close to that. On many mboards you can set the second Serial or Com port to either serial or infrared mode in the bios Setup. On older mboards you may need to move a jumper. But you would need a receiver/transmitter infrared unit to connect to those pins. You won't see an infrared device in Device Manager until such a device is connected; it may require drivers to be installed. "Dell 400 Pentium II workstation " is too vague a description for me to be able to tell you for sure whether you have the pins for connecting an infrared device to your mboard. What's the exact model? If your not sure see the Dell site and try to identify it. If it is a Precision 410 Workstation it doesn't, and least I can't find any diagram that shows it or mentions of it. (I didn't see any front panel related pinouts either).

Reply: Hi The USB DCU-60 cable was missing from the Sony Ericsson box. I bought a cable now that fits from the phone. A two pin lead on the phone end and a USB the other end. This fixes the problem to transfer from mobile to computer. I may buy an Infrared USB adaptor - easier than messing about with the BIOS to figure out if the motherboard has infrared. Thanks all for your posts. Danny1234
