Hi,
I have posted several times regarding IE however, I am having the same problem with Firefox. I just downloaded it a few minutes ago.I thought by changing browsers it would correct my problem of not being able to access links on the internet, and I am having the same problem which leads me to believe its not an IE problem. I am able to access my home page (msn) but when I click on a link in favorites or even type in a url address I get page cannot be displayed....at the bottom of the page is a DNS error. Although, sometimes the links work. If I open AOL then IE and im assuming firefox will work.
I have run the connection wizard and it tells me that im already connected to the internet, I have a broadband connection.
Can anyone offer any suggestions for my problem. I have run all the anti virus, spyware programs and they have all come up clean.
I do have hijack this if would help. I should add that I have reformatted my computer 2x in the last 3 days. I have SP2 loaded also.
Thanking you in advance,
Nanette

I'm assuming the page that shows (msn) is your home page in which case it will probably be showing you the cached page from your hard drive which is why the links don't work along with any other web page request. It is probably a firewall issue blocking port 80. AOL i think uses a different port (i could well be wrong there). AOL is most likley configured to travel through the firewall anyway, which might be why the port is forced open in the way you described!
To get to the point - disable any 3rd party firewall software you have to test this theory and also chack to be sure the Windows XP firewall is disabled or a least configured to let you use port 80. To do this:
Right-click your network connection icon > Properties > Advanced
...if the Internet Connection Firewall option is ticked, untick it.
(If you have SP2 installed, just use the control panels security centre option to acces the xp firewall option.)
Actually i don't think xp firewall blocks port 80, butit won't hurt to check...i can't remember. It's late here...zzzzzz!!
Anyway, when you've done that try your browser again - Firefox is highly recommended ;-)

If that doesn't work then you might wanna check the dns service is started....but we will get to that....!

Hi Nanette,
I have plowed through your last 5 threads dating back to February 2nd. I noticed no one have asked you who is your ISP. Is AOL your ISP?
Hi HIT,
As an FYI, AOL uses Proxy server and several Windows services. I haven't check them out. Also, I believe the only time AOL requires access through a FW port is when one uses AOL AIM.

Hi Hit,
I did what you said regarding the firewall and windows firewall is off. My ISP is AOL and I have a firewall set up thru them.
When I have AOL on, then IE will work. I just dont understand what the problem is. I just did a repair on my network connection, but it didnt help.
Any other suggestions?Thanking you in advance,
Nanette

Hi,
I just went to firefox page and was trying to check out the enhancing firefox section and when I clicked on plugins I received this message: mozilla.org could not be found. It seems like I can get the main page of a site to come up but when I click on a link within the site I cannot access that page.
any suggestions?
nanette

Hi
Nanette, in order for you to view web pages you need to be connected to the internet via an isp which in your case is AOL. So to use the intrnet through AOL you WILL need to sign into AOL first (otherwise you are not connected to the net). After you have done this you can minimize AOL and use another browser or browse with the AOL built-in rubbish that it comes with.
It sounds like your expecting to be connected to the internet all the time, but your not. AOL does not give out static ip addresses unless specificlly asked for - and then i'm not sure how long it would take or whether they would actually give you one.
SUMMARY: If you wanna go online, you have to sign-in with aol. Then you can do what you want.
Unless you wanna use pop3 for email - now there's a story....:-)

HI,
Thanx for responding. Well before this problem with connections started (about 2/3 weeks ago or so) I was able to sign onto my home page, type in a site and go to the site without being on AOL. I was able to use AOL and IE independently. I dont understand what happened. And there are times that I can type in site to go to and will work. So its not happening all the time.Maybe in one of the SP2 fixes there will be a fix, or maybe by some miracle it will just fix itself LOL.
Thank You for all your help with this, I appreciate you taking the time and patience.
Have a great day,
Nanette

No problem Nanette.
It may have worked before if your computer was automatically signing in for you when you started the computer. Thats the only explanation i can think of becasue you have to be signed in before you can use the world wide web.
