IE8 Compatibility Mode

Can anyone tell me if the IE 8 compatibility mode will still function correctly if upgrading from IE6. I ask this because it indicates that when this is engaged it reverts to the IE7 'engine' - which, to my way of thinking, may not be present if IE7 has never been loaded. Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.
