My browser, IE7, sometimes causes very high CPU usage, up to 50%.
It occurs when I have more that one browser open, but not every time by any means. Sometimes I can kill the offending browser by simply closing it. Sometimes that does not work, forcing me to use Task Manager to end the process.
I can also stop the high CPU usage sometimes by closing the other open browsers. So I think there must be a conflict of some sort, and my gut feeling is that it is related to flash software embedded on webpages.
The only browser add-ons I have enabled are Shockwave Flash Object, SSV Helper Class and Sun Java Console.
Anyone have a similar problem or any ideas?
EdHuh?

IE7 is a memory hog especially when you have multiple windows open. Shut unnecessary IE 7 windows / tabs down to see if that solves the problem.
Or you can always revert back to IE6 or change completely to Firefox or Opera, which are not as resource hungry...

I think being a memory hog and using high CPU percentage are two different things.
With 3.0 GHz CPU and 2.0 GB RAM, you should not have any problems with web pages utilizing flash or java.
Your configuration is similar to mine as I have a P4 3.0 GHz HT processor and 2.0 GB RAM plus WinXP SP2 with IE7 and Flash and Java. My CPU usage is very low even when there are several IE7 instances running with several tabs each with a different web site.
You should look elsewhere for the cause of your problems. Maybe a virus or even a legitimate background process from an installed software.
Hope the above helps.
