IE6 not working

imhaving problems accessing the internet on my computer which runs through a router from another computer i never had a problem setting up before, i recently had to reinstall windows xp and the first day the internet was working fine, but then when i turned my computer off and back on the internet was not working, went to set up new connection and set the connection manually and through a LAN like i have a million times before but now it seems now to work, and now in windows xp there are so many networking options. i know im im connected to the internet because when i unplugg the ethernet cable from the ehternet card the icon on taskbar goes on saying connection disconneted. if anyone can help, please do

i forgot to mention, i installed norton system works, does that have anything to do with it ? i tried unistalling it but i have problems, its not in the remove/add programs menu so i dont know if that has anything to do with it
