Which is considered overall more stable, safest and uses the least amount of resources, IE6, IE7 or FireFox?
If upgrading from IE6 to either IE7 or FireFox will the new selection use the previous settings from IE6 or is a mass settings reset required?
Thank you.

IE6 uses the least resources, but both IE7 and FF imports previous settings.

I am using both IE6 and Firefox 3. Primarily FF3. I just leave the IE6 icon up in case I have a problem accessing the net I can verify if it is a FF issue or not.

When first installing FF3 you will need to do some customizing and importing after that it functions much the same as IE.

I personally don't card for multiple tabs so I don't use them. So FF3 and IE6 aren't that much different. There are some features I like beter than IE6. One is that if I am say in this forum as I am now typing and need a link. In FF3 I can go to another place on the net, get the link, and back button to this window without losing the typed message. Try that in IE6 and you will find you must retype what you had. Another thing I like is how easy it is to add links to often used sites. Just drag the URL icon to the taskbar and the link is created.

I haven't found it to be any more stable. I do get kicked off from time to time. However, when opening FF3 again you get an option to restore your previous session of start a new one.

Whatever browser you use, get CCleaner and use it often. I use it at least daily.

Yeah, CCleaner is a decent tool in the portable configuration.

So I can install FF and can still keep IE6 installed?

So is there any real need to upgrade IE6 to IE7 then?

Which FF did you feel was better FF2 or FF3?

Thanks.

FF3 is much better than FF2. Actually when I first tried FF it was FF2 and I didn't like it and went back to IE6. I also tried IE7 and hated it so a Went back to IE6. Pretty much 99% FF3 now.

You can have multiple browsers. Actually I think it is difficult to completely remove IE. I find no reason to do that. It is a good idea to keep IE6 updated. I don't use auto updater though. periodically go to Windows update and see what is available then decide what to apply.

I agree as I just check the updates myself as well and dont like something trying to update itself and prefer to control that.

So you like FF3 better than FF2, good to know; just curious as to what you hated briefly about IE7?

Better to ask what I liked about it. The answer was nothing. I didn't find one thing that I liked better than IE6 and many thing that became more cumbersome.

The main advance in IE7 is tabs. As I stated, I don't like tabs. If you do you can use them in IE7 or FF3. In IE6 you had to open a second instance of IE6 to keep the first and go elsewhere. In FF3 if you don't use tabbed browsing you will only have one FF3 icon in the tray but if you have gone to multiple places they will all be there in a list. You can go to the one you want or close out of order ar close all.

I guess it depends on how you use your browser. I am old fashioned. I still use the old style Windows Classic start menu.

I've tried numerous browsers but right now I have IE7 & FF3. I've grown accustomed to tabbed browsing & find the old method (IE6) to be cumbersome. As OtheHill said, FF3 is a huge improvement over FF2 plus FF is highly customizable & has plenty of add-ons available.

There are others you can experiment with too...Opera, Maxthon, SeaMonkey (love the name...lol), Google Chrome, Netscape, Safari & more.

If you use CCleaner to clear Firefox's cache etc., be sure and do it while Firefox is closed because using it while open can cause weird display problems and they won't go away until you clear the cache normally.

I use CCleaner while FF3 is open all the time and have no issues with it.

You're either one of the lucky ones or maybe they fixed CCleaner so it doesn't cause the problem anymore, but Firefox does not like to let third party cleaners empty its' cache while running.

I've given the advice to clear the cache using Fx's inbuilt utility on several occasions at different message boards and it fixes the problem.

I use IE6 primarily. This is the best that I have found for playing games.

IE7 has too many Java issues which is ussed in most games online now. and the fixes slow it way down to a crawl...IE7 went into the trash

FF3 is also set up on my computer but again find it slow to play online games with and I like OTH above do not care about the tab browsing.

I have also Google Chrome that I have been playing with. It loads very fast and plays games better than FF3. But again I hate the tabs and chrome posts all your past windows to be displayed on start-up which I also don't care about.

The one thing all of you seem to have overlooked is that Firefox 3 has a download manager too! That can be very useful if the computer crashes or connection is lost, or if you simply want to pause the download! Firefox rules OK!
