I have bought pc with XP pre-loaded. It’s got 40gb hd, 256ddr ram, etc
Now something annoying is going! When in nt explorer / internet explorer evrytime I try to enter characters by pressing on keys the application shuts down. But when navigating around sites via mouse I am able to work ok. It opens up any site I want to go to but as soon as I start typing for eg email address in appropriate field then it shuts down. Looking in error report it gives module name as WBHOOK32.DLL
I am writing this message in Windows & cutting n pasting onto this message board which works but will shutdown if trying to type directly onto web page!!! Aaarghhhh!! Pls Help!!!!!!!

Do you have McAfee virus scan installed on your computer?

I don't use McAfee so I'm not sure what configurations are available. If in fact you are using McAfee, are you sure that you are using an XP compatible version? Here's what WBHOOK.DLL is for:
Support library for VShield scanner. Allows scanner to intercept e-mail and Internet traffic.

Let me know more details about your system's software.
Thanks

Hi Fred,

Thanks for response.

When I bought the system it came with McAfee VirusScan 6.01 (OEM version) on a cd which I installed. So I would of thought it would be compatible but would you be able to confirm that?
Everything was working fine for weeks until recently.
Would it be wise to uninstall McAfee and see if that makes a difference?

Assistance greatly appreciated mate!
Cheers

Hi Fred,

I have sort of answered my query to you in the fact that I disabled McAfee and all is working now as it should be! When typing on web pages it responds fine!!!!

But still need help as when I re-enabled McAfee it starts to have the same problem. I have tried enabling/disabling the virus scan settings for internet/email but still get this original issue of ie6 shutting down!!

Any ideas why it was working ok for a few weeks but now behaving this way?
Any ideas what the config settings should be set as?

Is it advisable to try un-installing & then re-installing McAfee?

Thanks for all your help!!

I have the same problem, but only if Kazaa runs. I also have mcafee v 4.5.1, but xp compatible ( i downloaded a patch). If Kazaa does not run, I dont have the problem with IE6

Thank you for providing clue to this strange problem. I have Virus Scan 4.5 ,Windows 2000 professional SP2 and IE 6.0.2600.0000. I searched microsoft site but there is nothing there. I searched even for this word "wbhook32.dll" but got nothing. I think I have to move to another antivirus!

Well I dont know much about Macfee 6.0 cause I have it installed and it works just fine however when I installed Gorkster I began facing the same problem all of you are facing in fact netscape 6.2 and IE 6.0 both give the same errors however when Grokster is not working I face no problems. My bet is that the IE pop up that grokster is using has a problem. Are any of you using other software which gives pop windows evry now n then??

I've just come across this problem having upgraded to virusscan 6... Yep, I'm running ie6 and kazaa 1.5.1

Interestingly enough, if I leave Kazaa on the "Theatre" screen (Which doesn't display a banner in the bottom left) I don't get the error... if kazaa is on the screen with a banner, IE dies... (Explorer will die as well if i'm typing to (say) a filename on the desktop rather than in the browser - the joys of integrating the browser and the OS I guess)

Now I seem to remember that the popups in kazaa are controlled by cydoor and that a hacked version of one of the dll's disables it.... haven't tried it, so i've no idea what effect it'll have - probably it'll stop kazaa from working properly, but you never know...

I have the same problem. McAfee says they'll "research the problem". I do not believe this problem is specific to the IE6 browser only, since the same error occured under Netscape. If I disable all scanning the issue stops. I've been using Norton in the meantime, but I cannot stand Norton. I have VScan 6, uninstalled, reinstalled, manually uninstalled, downloaded the updated 6.02 version, and the problem cannot be fixed. The error does have something to do with McAfee trying to use wbhook32.dll (webhook) to access the browser, but I cannot figure out a way to resolve this. Maybe it has something to do with XP, but Microsoft does not have this problem documented. I hope someone can help.

In response to your problem, I do know that the HAWK email scanning in McAfee VirusScan 6.0 had problems with Outlook/Outlook Express: upon PREVIEWING an email with an empty subject line, the hawh32.dll module (installed and used by VirusScan) would bomb Outlook/OutlookExpress.

You can correct this, if this is your problem, by opening the McAfee console and disabling HAWK/email scanning.

CORRECTION: the previous message sould read "hawk32.dll"

Also, this problem originally discussed is a growing one. I have encountered it numerous times, and until now didn't even realise that KaZaa was running every time it happened. I was about to throwin the towl and reformat/reinstall.

So, thanks everyone! I will just be sure to (drink your ovaltine) not use KaZaa everytime I need IE. What a pain. but no error yet when KaZaa isn't running.

Why did Morpheus chage for the worse?????? Oh, God why?!!?!

For me, the IE 6 crash dealing with wbhook32.dll occurs without Kazaa running. Kazaa is installed on my XP when this occurs, but not running or running as an icon on the taskbar.
