I am having a problem with Internet Explorer under Windows XP. I get the message that Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, but IE really doesn't provide much of a clue as to what is triggering the problem other than the error code 0xc0000005. The problem often occurs when an IE window is closed. The problem with Windows XP is that Microsoft has placed roadblocks to thwart any attempts to fix the problem. IE6 can't be unininstalled and reinstalled, the only option offered in Add/Remove programs is to remove the icon from the start menu (how idiotic can Microsoft get?) If I attempt to reinstall IE6, I just get a message that setup cannot continue because a newer version is already installed. I have tried the Microsoft KB but this specific problem is not addressed there. Would appreciate any help form anyone that has been able to resolve this problem.

the error message should give you the module that is causing IE6 to crash...normally towards the left upperhand corner of the error message it will say what process (iexplorer.exe) and then the mod which could show a certain DLL that came from adware/spyware, virus, or that just needs to be replaced, or just say unknown, you can remove IE6 by going to add/remove components in the add/remove programs...i would check for adware/spyware/viruses using adware/spybot/msantispyware update your virus scanner and run a scan in safe mode with system restore turned off...almost might want to run system file checker to for any missing/corrupt DLL's...

I have had this problem with IE and XP to. It was a pain to reinstall IE, but is definatly possible. After following the steps on the following link I was able to reinstall IE and it worked fine after that. Read the whole post, even if you dont understand it. Dont just skim through it.

To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Let me know if you need help with it, or whether it fixes the problem or not.
