If it's a problem with file associations, you can try cleaning the registry. Also check that your default program list is correct in Internet Options.

Are you bound to IE6 and IE7 for any reason in particular? These browsers are particularly with the slightest whiff of malware on a computer, and I'd recommend grabbing yourself a copy of Firefox or Safari. See if the error exists on these browsers and if it does, follow the usual malware removal procedures.

The HJT log shows that you have IE8 installed. Remove it from Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. IE8 is still beta and has many problems yet.

IE8 has caused many problems for me as well as my friend. Sometimes hard drive problems are detected by Windows and referenced in the system section of the Event Log (Control Panel>Adminstrative Tools>Event Viewer). Look in there for listings pertaining to the hard disk by double clicking on each warning or error sign and reading the error.

If the hard drive is making unusual sounds, I would look into changing the hard drive.

I'd also do a chkdsk on the drive. Go to Start>Run, type cmd and press enter. Type chkdsk /f without quotes and press enter.

If you can't find any errors in the event log, and your hard drive sounds normal, and chkdsk finds and fixes any problems with your hard drive, then personally I would think IE8 is the problem.

By the way, did you install ANY new applications before this happened?
