OS: XP
CPU/Ram: Dell 4600 256SDRAM?
Comment:

IE6 won't open. I get the send/don't send error report message, and when I click on the details, I get:

Appname: Iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModName: winshow.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1
Offset: 00009901

(E-mail and IM still work)

I ran a virus scan (I have McAfee), and 5 files were found (Can't recall the names, but Adware was part of their description). I quarantined them, no change, so then deleted them. Still no IE6. I tried two system restore points. Still no IE6.

Looking around online (at work), I find several references to "winshow", but those problems only block SOME webpages. I've switched my homepage to everything I can think of, and still, it won't open. How can I download HiJack, AdAware, or anything else to hlep me if I can't open a single page?

Poking around in regedit, I found two winshow.dll files. I haven't deleted them... yet.

Any clue what to do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi ABauerle,

Norton(Symantec) has these manual removal procedures:
Norton: Adware.Winshow
Norton: Trojan.Digits

Here are a few links for when you do get IE to work:
Keep in mind that some of them need to be updated over the web when first started, and before zapping the baddies!
Spybot Search & Destroy
Lavasoft Adaware
Merijn.org / CWShredder
AVG anti-virus
TDS-3
PANDA online virus-check
HouseCall Scanner

I'm at home and online again! That got it! Yay!

Thank you so very much SVG. I'm installing SpyBot right now. (Should I add any others?)

Now where can I send the $10 donation to your presidential campaign, and where can I send the $500 donation for the group that wants the death penalty for virus-makers?

Great to hear you showed it who's Boss !!

I've got most of them(and quite a few more) downloaded just in case. But if you run one or two anti-virus programs & Spybot & AdAware regularly (first updated), then you'll be as safe as is reasonable.

This one is designed to keep them off your machine:
Spyware Blaster

I think the US needs a President that can comfort the People instead of scaring them.
Choose wisely, I would say...

Microsoft recently put up a bounty-system for dealing with Hackers, and the likes (and to protect themselves from lawsuits).
Whenever I'm having a diner with BillGates, I'm expecting him to pay for it : )

Have a fantastic year !!

This parasite is an easy one to get rid of
WINSHOW.dll is the module that has caused an error in IExplorer.exe
(Here is an easy way to get rid of that one and any other close relatives of this homepage hijacker variant)

1. start>run
2. regedit
3. in the registry editor make sure that you have clicked on and highlighted my computer at the top of list on the left.
4. click on edit> then find.
5. do a search for these items
---- winshow
---- winlink
---- 5D60FF48 (this is incredifind)

6. Here is the process when doing a search for these items in the system registry
a. input the name then click find
b. it should briefly say "scanning system registry" and then stop once it has found a parasite key. if it scans all the way through and says "scan system registry complete" and you have to hit ok. skip to e.
c. hit delete, and then "y" on the keyboard. follow up after that by hitting "F3" which begins another search.
d. repeat these steps until you see the message. "the system registry scan is complete" and you have to hit ok.
e. repeat steps a-c for all the items listed above

You repeat this process for each of the items i mentioned above to remove all parasites from IEbrowser.
This is a good general scan/clean procedure for any type of error "iexplorer.exe has encountered an error and is shutting down"

HOPE THIS HELPS.
