I have a Dell system I am working on that was riddled with Viruses and Spyware. They have all been removed, but I am having an issue.
IE does not want to connect to the Internet. Instead, it just says in the status bar: "Connecting to 127.0.0.1" then comes up with the DNS error page.
Type in a URL (I.E. www.google.com) and it scans (Checking for www.google.com.com, www.google.com.net, www.google.com.edu, etc.) Huh? Then gives you the DNS error page.
Now, here's what I can do:
- Spyware program can connect and update (I assume it's using it's own connection settings).
- HijackThis was ran and does not see anything malicious running nor do I see anything in Task Manager that catches my eye.
- Callwave can connect. (Same assumption above).
- Windows is downloading updates. (Hmmm)
- Anti Virus will not connect (Assume is taking IE's settings). Had to update manually. Here's what I've manage to perform:
- Ran Anti-Virus (Removed 19 Viruses)
- Ran Spyware (AdAware and Spybot) and removed 210 items.
- Executed: netsh int ip reset - to reset tcp/ip stack (Nothing)
- Removed Winsock/Winsock32 from registry and reinstalled TCP/IP (Nothing)
- Fixed HOSTS file (That was nasty!..Still Nothing!)
- Even ran WinSockFix (Just to make sure I didn't miss anything...Still nothing).
- I can ping and tracert to a web site (URL or IP).
- Made sure Proxy was not enabled in Properties. (Nada)
- Upgraded from SP1 to SP2.
- Temporarily disabled Firewall (Nope..still nothing!)
- Modem is set to automatic IP, not set for Static IP and needs none.Still no Internet with IE and running out of options.
Can anyone help???

Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

Have you tried other browsers such as Firefox, Opera,
Netscape, Mozilla ?www.mozilla.org.com

Charles:Obviously, if you're having serious problems with IE, one way to repair it is to run the Windows XP installation CD to repair Windows. But if you don't have your copy of the installation CD handy, there's another way: you can just reinstall IE 6, but first you need to edit the registry so Windows will think IE isn't installed. Here's how:
Open the registry editor. Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Right click the value labeled IsInstalled and select Modify. Change the data value setting from 1 to 0.
Close the Registry Editor.
Now you can download and install IE 6 (with service pack 1) from the following link:
http://www.winxpnews.com/rd/rd.cfm?id=041026HT-Download_IE6
This also includes the installation files for Outlook Express. Also note that you may need to reapply Windows XP Service Pack 2 to regain the SP2 changes to IE (such as the popup blocker). As always, backup the registry before you make any changes, or at least create a Restore Point.

You need to repair you stacks, try any one of the programs below:
0. VB_Winfix 1.2.
1. WinSockFix 1.1.0.13 1.2.
2. LSPFix.Goodluck.

Well, an update...
Per, I looked at the article, and after editing the reg, installing IE (I have a CD w/ver 6 on it), is still complained a new version was still installed.
Joshua, Mozilla works fine. I would advise the people who own this machine use it, but other programs are dependent on IE's setting (Outlook Express, Anti Virus programs, et al...)
Sabertooth, I've already run these programs (See my first post above).
Any recommendations to overriding setup to stop check the version and just install IE?

Update...
I had another CD which had IE6. It installed fine, yet I am still having this problem.
I have a dial up and wireless router (Can't get broadband/DSL here!). I set up my main PC to be a proxy server and set up the subject PC with the proxy settings. It works!
However, disconnect everything, turn off proxy and IE will still not use Dial Up connection!
I'm going crazy here!

Missed your earlier info about the WinSockFix effort...(just a thought here)
If you delete the default connection and you go through IE's internet options new connection wizard to setup the dialup connection again, is the option "Connect using a Dial-up Modem" greyed out and unavailable?
-- Always do what you are afraid to do --

"Connect using a Dial-Up Modem" is NOT greyed out. Matter of fact, I ran through it to see if that might set it straight. Didn't help.
I've been working on PC's over 20 years, never saw this advanced type of IE refusal to connect through Dial up.

try start|run netsh diag gui
what are the results?look for anything trying to point to 127.0.0.1
scan the registry for any 127.0.0.1 entries

Hi,
I had the same problem today. I just did a system restore to last night at 7:58 pm and voila it worked. So what happened from then until now, who knows. It works now and that is all I am worried about.
Good luck!
