It's probably an automatic task. Make sure there isn't one setup. There was an update that happened all the time on one of my old laptops.

IE should never show in MSCONFIG - that's quite normal.

Everywhere i checked said to disable in MSCONFIG. I knew it never showed there. Now what? Its still doing it. MS was supposed to send some possible solutions since i cant afford $99 to have them do it. As usual, nothing from MS.

I know it isnt showing in MSCONFIG under startup. Never could find it there even though all the 'HELP' sites said differently. MS was supposed to send some possible solutions since i cant afford $99 to have them do. But as usual, MS failed to follow through. Guess if you cant pay them and you're warranty is expired, they wont help.

Did you try the links Johnw posted? Never used them myself but it does seem to me that Windows is a tad messed up. IE repair is an option but somehow it is hard to imagine an IE issue that causes it to keep starting up on its own.

The other possibility is some sort of virus. It would be worth running MalwareBytes freebie as this often finds and fixes things that AV's miss:

If it finds anything of importance it would then be worth pursuing further.

What does trendmicro have to do with this? Was it going there for an update? Blocking the website won't stop the program from firing.

I suspect there's a scheduled task that is driving this. Check that out in, I believe, control panel/admin tools/task scheduler. make sure you expand all the subfolders there.

IE kept starting up and going to Trendmicro. I blocked that site but IE keeps opening randomly with the Trendmicro web address. But cant access it. John's ideas didn't work. Paul,I'll try your idea.

If Trendmicro is still installed, it may be calling IE directly. You should parse TM's settings if there's nothing in task scheduler.

Have you still got a Tendmicro program onboard or have you ever used one of their tests?

Could be worth checking in Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs.

It's no longer installed, I had the same issue it's a scheduled task. It's how trend micro does their advertising and updates. If you delete the schedule task it should go away.

Is Trend Micro still installed?

If not, what AV are you using?

IE 8. It used to open to www.trendmicro.com. Used the Internet options to block but IE keeps starting randomly but with the http 404 error message. Had to reinstall OS last year. Might just have to deal with it. Mostly annoying.

ellerbj - JohnW's question is pertinent: is TM still installed?

There's another way at this. Go to Start / Run (same as Winkey - r) and enter msconfig. in msconfig go to the Startup tab and look for anything that resembles TM and disable it. Now reboot and see what happens.

TM hasn't got a bad reputation so it looks as if you were a bit unlucky.

Good idea from paul1149. Seems to me that either TM is still installed or at least enough to fire up IE, so there is a good chance of seeing it in msconfig. If so you could at least "shut it up", although some registry entries might remain lurking.
