Hi
We have a XP machine with IE6, when we open IE the search windows shows up automatically with lycos. How do I stop the search window from showing and we don't want to use lycos also.
Thanks
Ken

Ken,
With IE open, click your search window open and click "customize" (on top of the search box) There you can set the search engine you want... or windows search assistant... whatever.
I like having google in my search box. You can download a .reg file from google for it if you want (it's not available from the list in "customize).

The only way I was able to remove lycos crap from someones machine was to do it in safe mode. (tap f8 while booting, choose safe mode) then go to add/remove programs and remove lycos search.
Reboot to regular mode and lycos should be gone.
Chances are if this lycos was installed and you don't know how...you likely have other spyware on your computer.
Spybot search and destroy, Ad-aware are both good free programs to help remove spyware. Make sure you update them before running scans.
I also use spywareblaster and spyware guard to help protect IE and help stop spyware from being installed.
Spyware guard will alert you if something (including yourself) tries to change your home/search pages and gives you to accept the change or put it back to the way you had it.
Spywareblaster installs a killbit in your registry for over 1000 bad products to stop them from installing.
Spybot and ad-aware are both detection and removal programs.
All 4 products need to be updated regularly.(download the full setup)
Good luck
