Hi all,

I am trying to get Internet Explorer to goto a link which should open a file in its program (MSWord). However IE isn't downloading then opening, its just trying to read it within IE.

Firefox works fine by downloading the file then using the associated program.

Any ideas where I can change this in IE?

Thanks for the quick reply..

I have a .data file which I want to open with MSword. I have added registry entries for it.

datafile="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" "%1"

The "browse in same window" option is grayed out for it in the advanced section and it only displays Open as the action. I also tried adding the BrowserFlags registry entry but still doesn't work.

Try IE Reset tool from here:

And make sure you have the latest Internet Explorer from here:

I have mentioned the above two, just to eliminate Internet Explorer as the issue
Even if it doesn't correct the fault, it is good to confirm that Internet Explorer is updated and in Default settings

It may fix the issue

No luck with IE version or reset :(

As a test I have changed the association of .data to Word.Document.8 and I now get the option to "browse in same window", disabled the option but still doesn't open.

I have tried enabling this option for .doc and .pdf and it doesn't make any difference.

Does it work for you?

Do you want to post or private message me the URL link to your DOC page?

Note: I scanned everything that comes in, but be aware that opening DOCuments directly from the web is unsafe (may contain malware)

TXT files and LOG files are safe, but not DOC

Usually users conert their DOC files to html, or MHT (you can do this in Word itself) and upload that

DOC is really not ideal
I haven't actually checked, but its highly likely IE Security settings just won't allow it.

Can you just right click and save the DOCument

Sorry the URL link is to an internal site so you won't be able to see it. To avoid sending the document, please save any word doc as .data file and you will have what I have.

Then you'll just have to open with IE in a link to replicate it.

I already believe you without doing it

Anyway, you yourself could just google any "filetype:doc" to prove it yourself

I can find .doc files on the net no problems.. its .data what is not working through IE.

I'm not sure where a .data (word file) is on the net to show you. I can test IE using .data from my intranet site, so if you have any ideas please shoot them through and I'll give it a shot.

From the intranet site if I right click on the link it I get these options:

Open - Just opens document in IE.
Save Target As - Saves file as .htm by default but if I change to .data it will download and give me the option to open, which opens in word successfully.

Save Target As - Saves file as .htm by default but if I change to .data it will ....

So it is not a data file it is a HTM file

We have found the answer :)

I must go now, its late here

Good night.. thanks for your help today. I don't think it is a HTM file tho.

Right click the link > properties:

Type= DATA file
Address URL=

I think its the association type, i just tried changing .data=Word.Document.8 and the same thing happens :(
