Hi folks,

On XP Pro, IE is very slow recently, when retriving a page, it almost hangs there, and I can't even change to other window. checked in Task manager, the "System" process is occupying 70% cpu and IE 30%. I have already checked with Norton,Ad-aware,Spybot(all updated. Also XP itself-maybe that's the problem) and Hijack, not a trace!
Only clue is: I just installed the new ZA 4.5.(I use its trial Pro, but the IE-hanging-problem was more severe, so uninstalled and use basic).

Any input here will be very appreaciated.

you could try reinstalling your IE, or check to make sure you have the latest version. if you want to risk it there's another browser called opera that works faster but be careful because it has no encryption.

Try this 1st . ( It may not apply )
Slow IE .
4) Better Than Rogaine
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2003/2003-04-28.htm
Start > Find > Files or folders , type into the top space > Hosts (no extension, just Hosts . Make sure you are in C drive ) & press Enter .
You may have 2 hosts files , 1 is a sample ( SAM ) file .
The other is associated to this >

http://technoerotica.net/mylog/hostfile.html
SpyBot have a Host file list .
http://beam.to/spybotsd

If you would like to completely disable your Hosts file, rename it to "Hosts.txt". When you want to use it again, change it back to "Hosts".
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html

# in front of a line , means it is disabled .

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts

Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000/XP)

NOTE: Hosts is the name of the hosts file and not another directory name. It does not have an extension (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames) and so appears to be another directory in the example above.

http://members.rogers.com/hfc/HostFileChecker.zip
Host File Checker Searches through your System's Host file and removes duplicate entries from the Host file. Your Host file allows you to block sites of your choice by IP or name. Ensure that comments have been taken out of the Host File since it will most likely include that as part of the duplication check.

Another way to fix IE6 slow page load with XP .
http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=958

Here's an easier way to get to index.dat file as addresse in another tweak submitted here.

1. click on Internet Explorer
2. go to to your root dir (usually C:)
3. open Documents and Settings folder
4. open "your username folder"
5. open UserData
6. **close IE if you have it open**
rename index.dat to index.old
logoff and log back on (don't need to restart)

open up IE and go to a web page or site that always seemed to load slowly. It should load a lot more quickly now.

NOTE. Always rename or backup .dat or other system files before deleting.

Internet Explorer 6 Starts Running Slow
http://www.subdiv.net/articles/xp/xp3.htm

If Internet Explorer (IE) 6 is slowing to a crawl and/or hanging and starts to use 100 percent of CPU time it may well be a corruption of the "Temporary Internet Files folder". In particular, trying to delete Temporary Internet files via Tools, Internet Options or other privacy software seems to trigger this behavior. Also, attempts to view files in the Temporary Internet Files folder may show the folder as already empty when it is not. This behavior occurs because the Temporary Internet files database is corrupt.

The Temporary Internet files aren't really files but entries in %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat. Deleting that file solves the problem. This same problem has occured for NT users and the fix works for XP.

1. Open a command prompt window on the desktop (Start/Run/command).

2. Exit IE and Windows Explorer (iexplore.exe and explorer.exe, respectively, in Task Manager, i.e - Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Processes/End Process for each).

3. Use the following command exactly from your command prompt window to delete the corrupt file:

C:\>del "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat"

4. Restart Windows Explorer with Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del/Task Manager/Applications/New task/Browse/C:\Windows\explorer.exe[or your path]) or Shutdown/Restart the computer from Task Manager.

IE should now work properly.

You may have a variation of the CoolWebSearch hijacker .
Download and run the CWShredder Tool .
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html#cwshredder

Also download Spybot Search & Destroy by clicking here .
http://beam.to/spybotsd
Once you have the program installed, open SpyBot and select the "Immunize" icon on the left & cick Click on Immunize in the new page .
Then check the box "lock hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers". This will stop the program from modifying your "hosts" file again .

Also download & install these 2 programs .
