For whatever reason the IE Icon is missing in Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop which enables the option to either display the IE Icon on the Desktop or not, my system is updated to WinXP SP3 and I never really noticed that it was missing or not before and I just installed FireFox3 which is much better than IE and so I wanted to disable the IE Icon from the Desktop without uninstalling it?
Thank you.

So you want to disable something that you're not going to use but isn't showing up anyway? Or, is the icon already on the desktop, and you can't uncheck the option in the Customize Desktop configuration?

The IE Icon is on the desktop and I just want it not displayed is all, not uninstalled, as I may need to re-display it later perhaps for whatever reason and it used to be that you could right click on the desktop then Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop and find the IE Icon with the other desktop icons and either check or uncheck them in order to display them on the desktop or not.

Deleting an icon doesn't uninstall any program, including IE. The icon is just a shortcut. Right click it and delete it.
editFor what it is worth I will tell you how I handle most icons.
I drag the icon to the tray, next to the start menu button. I currently have 27 icons down there and there is room for more. I can launch any of those programs while I have a full screen. Don't use any resources to my knowledge. I delete the original on the desktop most times. Gets a little confusing to others that may sit down at this computer but the icons are the same ones as their larger cousins. Not much clutter on the desktop and access to most regularly used programs.

No, I understand all of that thanks, the problem is that I am wondering what happened to the option to hide/display the IE Icon from the desktop in WinXP or did SP3 do away with it perhaps?
If you have WinXP SP3 installed then right click on the desktop then Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop and find the IE Icon which gives an option to hide or display from the desktop, is it there?

Under 'desktop icons':
My Documents
My Compter
My Network Places
Internet ExplorerIn the ICONS window I have:
My Computer
MyDocuments
My Network Places
Recycle Bin full
Recycle Bin emptyI have SP2 and IE6

I have SP3 installed and my options are
My Doc's
My Comp
My Network Places
I also have Firefox set to default browser which may be why it's not seen in the Desktop Icons option. Not for sure though but am curious

Well I have been reading that others have experienced this as well and that the display/hide IE Icon in Customize Desktop Items is not there and apparently they are saying that it is M$'s doing.
I also have SP3 installed and under Display Properties > Customize Desktop > Desktop Items my options are:
My Docs
My Comp
My Network Places
Recycle Bin Full
Recycle Bin Empty

I found this

but it looks outdatedHere's another link with a reg file fix or info to do it manually.

GregS,
Apparently M$ disabled enable/disable Internet Explorer in Customize Desktop / Desktop Items for some reason and even altering the Registry Keys didn't make any difference, but here is an alternative that I came across that works just the same and hides the Internet Explorer Icon without uninstalling anything or editing the registry;
Here is the link:
http://www.digitalalchemy.tv/2006/0...And here are the Instructions:
To hide IE,1. Go to Start->Control Panel and open up Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select Set Program Access and Defaults.
3. Expand Custom by clicking on it.
4. Uncheck the box next to Internet Explorer labeled "Enable access to this program" and click OK.
Thats it, IE should now be hidden and doing the opposite will place it back onto the Desktop.
