Hi,
I just reformated windows xp and am having the same problem that I was having before the reformat. Here it goes: I can sign onto Internet Explorer. I used to have Yahoo as my homepage I now have MSN. If I type in a site to go to it tells me the page cannot be displayed. Sometimes, after about the 3rd try I can get it to come up.
Or I have to do a google search and it will come up that way. But then I cannot access a site that google brings up. And sometimes it takes 3 tries for google to come up.
Example...I play games in Ion Thunder and you need Java to play the game. I got into Ion Thunder thru a google search. Within their site there is a Java button, I clicked on the Java button and after the 3rd try it started to download. Half way thru the download it quit and said the page couldnt be displayed.
One more question.....the xp software that I have has SP1 on it. Do I have to go get all the updates for SP! before I can load the SP2 disk that I have.
I do not have anything loaded on my computer except for the drivers. I havent loaded programs or anti virus, etc.
Anyone that can help me with this problem I would most appreciate it.
Thanking you in advance,
Nanette

Nanette, SWAG, my guess is that you have been victimized. Your homepage gets set in IE and there is malware about that likes to change it. It is also specified in the registry so anything able to alter the registry can also reset your homepage.
If it were me, I'd reset homepage, download Spybot Search & Destroy, update it, scan, and immunize. That'll lock your home page & block any attempt to alter it. Suspect that will cure your other problems, but if not, post back.

Ed,
I just reformated this computer tonight and signed on about 2 hrs ago. I was having the same problem before I reformated. I had spybot on before, but havent loaded it yet because I want to put on SP2 before I load any programs, in case it messes me up. But im not sure if I can just put in SP2 without updating SP1a first.

I just tried activating windows xp again and it told me I needed to be connected to the internet. I have a broadband connection, so im always conneceted to the internet. Does this information help any?
Thanx,
Nanette

But im not sure if I can just put in SP2 without updating SP1a first.
You don't need SP1a first. You can go straight to SP2 (it contains all fixes in SP1 and then some).
But if you connected to the Net without even SP1, then there's a good chance you've already been infected by one of the worms which exploited earlier unpatched versions of XP.
If you do a ctrl-alt-delete to bring up Task Manger, and then click on the 'processes' tab, do you find a DLLHOST (all caps) in there? If so, click on it and end process then get all your windows updates and do an online virus scan. If not, it still doesn't mean you're not infected, but that was the name the worm showed up with when these symptoms first appeared.

The XP disk that I have has SP1a already loaded on it. I ordered a copy of SP2 in the mail.
I do not have DLLHOST in processes.
I just did a reformat of my computer tonight.
I just rebooted and had some Kernel error and an ashml error or somthing like that. could this be a problem. I was getting those messages before the reformat. when I would reboot again it didnt come back again. Could this be a problem.

Here are the 2 Error messages:
At top of Box: AsmilHwlo
Cant open Kerneldriver asLM75.sysAt top of Box: AGetDmi
Can't load ASmHwlo.dll

I always install the OS first then mobo drivers I donot connect to web untill everything else is installed for protection ..period
in this order:
1) operating system
2) motherboard drivers
3) spywareblaster
4) spybot S & D
5) Hijack This
6) anti virus
7) winpatrol
8) now I install SP2 from disc
9) set up modem and router for home page and connect to web to go to M$ updateing
10) run and update all the programs all ready installed and it finds (everytime)
"Alexa Related" and some small non threatening worm. Fix them with whatever finds it and then set whatever "Hijack this" finds to the Ignore lists so that if anything strange pops up it is easier found without having to run through what I already know is good.
This sets everything up and I have always been clean without issues of anykind. It takes about 20 minutes to do this as I have everything pre set to install from a jump drive.
Then I start installing the other software programs and run HJThis and winpatrol to check for the registry changes and stop all the third party garbage from being installed.
It works out fine as after all is said and done HJThis will show up blank and everything else will comeout clean plus scotty the watch dog (winparol) has a complete start-up list that is locked and all proccesses are there to see what is going on. Then I do my tweaks to speed up logon and shutdown and time to rockand roll.
From time the install disc is first booted to finish (on most system) is 53 min.IN THE MATTERS OF STYLE,

Hi,
Did the first two things on you list.I just tried going to spybot and Internet Exlporer cannot find the page. I cant connect to any other places on the internet besides this site and my homepage, which is currently MSN.
Any suggestions? I am so upset right now I can spit nails. If I would have known that I would still be having these problems, I would never have reformatted.
So since I cant get on the internet to d/l these programs, what do I do now?
thanx,
Nanette

I got the things to finally download.
I d/l Hijack this also.
I wanted to post it, but was told that I couldnt without someone asking for it first.
Not sure if you saw previous posts, but can you please scroll up and read the Kernel errors I receive when my puter boots up? I get the messages on the desktop when the items are loading.
thanx
nanette

It seems to me that you picked up a trojan of some type and it is not going to let you do anything. without knowing exactly which one or what it is ....well it would be almost impossible to repair it.
Best thing is to just relax. It is only a computer and is nothing to get all up tight about it....believe it or not..you are still smarter than it is.
do another clean installation. the experience will calm you down. this stuff happens and the more that you mess around although it does get frustrating, the better you become at it.
Do it in this order and you will be fine.
1)unplug yourself from the internet and shut down the power to your modem and router if you have them.
2) reformat and reinstall the operating system
3) install the mobo drivers
4) install SP2
5) install what anti-virus program you have
If you don't have t don't fret.
6) now install your modem drivers and router if you are behind one.
7) configure your internet connection(home page)
8) now the first site you want to go to is:http://www.majorgeek.com
this is a safe site and is very protected.
look in the left column for spyware removal and click on it. then while you are there look for
a) spywareblaster
b)spybot s&d
c)hijack this
d)adawareSE
e)AVG anti virus(if you don't have any)
all of these are free so download each one to your desktop. Do everyone while you are there then shut down IE and go to your desktop and open and install each one. doNot worry about updating them yet. just get them installed and ran. Have each one fix whatever it finds.
I know it goes against the grain but you really don't have much choice. Just do it and you should be able to then go to windows update and anywhere else without any problems.IN THE MATTERS OF STYLE,

Are you running Asus PC Probe, if yes, that's the issue.

Thank you for the help. When we reformated, I dont believe we disconnected from the internet. By doing what is suggested, will that correct the Kernel errors also? Or is that yet another issue? LOL
I will let you know what happens. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.
We will reformat later on today. Must get some sleep.
Thanx,
Nanette
