When I first open up Internet explorer (version 6.0.00280) all is well, until I start going to different sites. When I type in the address or use the shortcuts or even links to the message boards on TSR.com, www.windows.com to name a few, IE just quits and I’m back to the desktop. No error message or anything. Now here is the odd twist. If I open outlook and use one of the links provided in my email I can browse the message boards and check for windows updates to my hearts content!?!?
At first I thought this may have been a zone alarm issue so I closed out the program altogether with no success. I even let the google bar allow popups, but still it didn’t seem to effect anything. I’ve run AD Aware and cleaned out what it found, but still the same problem persists. Any ideas?

Repair IE6

Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer 6. Microsoft has made IE part of the core operating system. If you think IE is screwed up, and want to repair it, you must use the sfc command:Start > Run , copy & paste Sfc /scannow & press Enter .
This will scan and restore protected system files ( which IE is ).
If this does not work, check out How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

If a repair doesn't do the trick, you can try a reinstall:
1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed Components \ {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
3. right-click the IsInstalled value, and then click Modify
4. Change the value data, from 1 to 0
5. Close the registry editor
6. Download and install Internet Explorer 6.The above will let you reinstall the Internet Explorer 6 browser component. To reinstall Outlook
Express 6, change the IsInstalled value from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Active Setup \ Installed Components \ {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}Note: You need to be logged on as an administrator to be able to change these registry keys.
Or ,
1) Click on Start > Run
2) Copy & paste the following line into Run >
rundll32.exe setupapi.InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf
4) Press Enter .
5) Have your XP cd ready .

Try the above, and then go to http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download install spybot.

Thanks for the feedback, but I cannot uninstall the old version of IE and the files that the program tries to install do not pass Windows XP validation. I think I'll have to bite the bullet and buy some beer to lure my computer savy friend over to fix this machine. Ah well C'est La Vie.
