IDE HDD causes windows to hang/freeze

July 14, 2009 at 14:53:25
Specs: Windows XP
I have a computer running windows xp on a SATA HDD... Recently I just ran combofix to get rid of some spyware and since then my IDE HDD has been causing my computer to freeze up. When I unplug the harddrive and restart my computer, everything runs fine. Whenever the IDE HDD is in the computer gets into a weird half frozen half able to function mode. I'm clueless and would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this problem as I really would like that IDE HDD to work, thanks.

With the IDE drive connected go to Device manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Expand the line and then right click on the Primary channel. Choose properties> advanced settings. Is the drive running in a DMA mode? Repeat for Secondary channel if you are using it.

Alright well I checked into it... the first two SATA controls report everything in DMA. The primary IDE is running DMA and the secondary says not available. http://tinyurl.com/l836s7

Well then there may be something wrong with the IDE drive. Download the drive fitness utility for that brand and type of drive and run it.

Could possibly be the IDE cable too.
