I've been using this setup for a long time, but just moved and reformatted and need to set this back up. It's been too long so I've forgotten the details.

Here's how it goes:
The DSL modem connects to my computer(ICS host), then using a secondary network card and a crossover cable, I connect to my little 4port netgear router. Then the other home computers connect to the router.

I can't get it working now, and I just don't remember what I did last time. I believe I had to change the routers IP and manually set the IP of one computer or another..

Anyone got any basic ideas of what I should be doing? Just need to refresh my memory and fiddle with it.

Change it around. Put the router between your modem and PC and then everyone gets to use internet without needing ICS

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Eh, I want my computer in front of the router. It's more trouble I know, but worth it in the end.

I feel kind of silly, I just found my old original post from the first time I did this, here on the forum. Should get me started. Had to disable DCHP on the router. We'll see how it goes now. :)

Yes then. disable DHCP on the router and use it only as a switching hub. Allocate each PC a static IP and enable ICS in the host. Run the networking wizard in the Host to set up ICS

Hurrah, got it. Much simplier than I remembered it being.

Disabled DHCP on the router and plugged the crossover cable into a LAN port instead of its WAN port (hehe) and now it's working flawlessly. :)

Amazing to see folks who insist on doing something that puts their network at the greatest risk and is slower [ics].

I would sure like to know what makes it "worth it in the end".

Sorry, I do not check for private messages

I guess what makes it "worth it in the end", wouldn't be the fact that your computer doesn't have the protection of the "hardware firewall", i.e. the router.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Why anyone would you ever want to use ICS instead of a hardware router is beyond me.

k guys, this is a similar problem that maybe you can help me with. im using a di-524 wireless router right now to connect my upstairs computer to the internet (the modem is downstairs with the other computer which ive wired into the router). anyways, ive also got a ps2 upstairs, but the wireless adaptor is at least $50, so what i wanna do is use ics to connect to the internet through the upstairs computer. ive changed my router's ip address, ive changed the ip address on my wireless adaptor, ive pinged 192.168.0.1 and its timed out, so nothing seems to be using that address. everytime i try to enable the ics though it says "an error occurred while internet connection sharing was being enabled. internet connection sharing cannot be enabled. a lan connection is already configured with the ip address that is required for automatic ip addressing." ive tried a ton of different combinations of setting on my router and on my adaptors and nothing seems to work. if any of you guys could give me a hand with this it'd be great. Thanks.
