Icons turned to .lnk files read only by MS Notepad?

Specs: Windows XP
As I was trying to fix my icons that just turned to .lnk files after updating my Microsoft Windows XP system, I accidently chose the wrong .exe file and chose Microsoft Word Notepad to read all files alike to this. So, everytime I try to click my icon of Skype for example, and it just opens Notepad and gives me crazy symbols. Also, all of my .exe files cannot open in the programs list.

files turning to links is usually the result of malware. Act accordingly.

Re #1
Choose the EXE fix from the list first.
If that doesn't help try the LNK fix.

If you get it going, run your AV scans, and also the freebie MalwareBytes as this often finds and fixes things that AV's can miss. You might still have a virus lurking.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
