Hi, I'm not exactly sure what is causing this problem and hope someone can tell me what i can do.

I have to new pc that are doing this.

This usually happens a few times a week in the morning.

When you log on to the pc, you do not get any icons or taskbar, or any startups. Are you get is the background and that is it. If I go into task manager I can see that things are running. I can start a program there and it would run. But on the desktop there isn't anything there. I tried the start key on the keyboard but that doesn't bring up anyting. I can only do things through task manager..
If i log off and back in, everything is back to normal.

These are on two new xp pro pcs..

Go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_... and scroll down to line 195 on the right hand column and download the file.

Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. It may be prudent to create a system restore point before updating the registry.

The problem is the taskbar, icons are there.. Just that once in a while it will not show up. no taskbar, no icons, or explorer.exe..

Doesn't seem like changing the registry from kelly's corner will help. That seems like restoring a taskbar, icons because it's been removed.

For starting explorer in task manager, that doesn't fix the problem but is a workaround...

any other thoughts?

Since only an intermittent problem, I wonder if problem is caused by a flaky harddrive ??
Mechanical devices do have problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

Try this

ALSO
Mostly on Desktop computers----
DUST collects inside computers, and can cause hardware
damage, overheating, faulty fans, faulty drives
Is yours clean.????

Hi chuck, as I mention above. These are two brand new XP PC. HD is not the problem and there is no dust.
I think the problem resides in XP OS. I've google the net and found people with similiar issues but without a resolution. I didn't find anything in microsoft.

If you read your original Post, it says
'I have to new PC', NOT the word "two".

Maybe this

Do you check for, and remove, Spyware ??
Spyware includes ----
Adware, Dialers, Browser Hijackers, Trojans, Cookies,
Key Loggers, Trackware, and other Malware while browsing the internet.

Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

My bad- typo...

I think this is one of those issues microsoft doesn't have a resolution for based on the hardware setup and OS you have in the system.

The pc's have been reinstalled to my configurations. There are no spywares, or any other virus in these computer.

Also try this:

(That one is a special Posting someone made of how he fixed it.)

Another fix is un-quarintene explorer in Spydoctor.

Yesterday my Desktop was showing in the quick launch. Today I have spent 2 hours trying to get it back. I have no idea why it went, or where it went. I did the notepad thing, tried to save the file, said one file already exsisted, but I saved it anyway, now I cannot even find THAT file, I am going mad here, please help. I have tried searching My computer, but nothing shows up, even though I know I have saved the file as a .scf. *bangs head on computer. I just want my Desktop icon to show in the quick launch.

You should have started your own thread.

However, download and run this script, number 61 right-hand side http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_...
