First off, having loads of icons in system tray is just as bad as having loads of icons splattered all over desktop. Both take up memory that could better be utilized for other things.

Secondly though, many programs have options in their settings or preferences to either turn on or turn off icon display in the system tray. So.. one place to check would be there.

Additionally, if your system goes unresponsive and then 'rights itself', some icons for certain programs tend to disappear from the system tray as well, even though programs are still running.

I'm not exactly sure what you are getting at as you have only really given a general overview of your problem. What specific icons are missing from your system tray that you want there?

Maybe the program manufacturer made it to show in msconfig but not in systray.

That is the case regarding a worm on my computer
that I got yesterday. It is msblast.exe
