I have a problem with my control panel. I want to delete a program using Add/Remove Programs. When I double-click on it nothing happens. This goes for all of the icons that are in the control panel folder. The same happens when I double-click on Windows media. Can someone help me.

frankla, Go to the link below and download the "CPL File Association Fix" zip file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

frankla, Is it only the Control Panel icons that won't open when you double click them? Since you downloaded and ran the cpl reg file fix try restarting your computer and then see if the Control Panel icons open.

frankla, Can you open individual control panel applications by using:
Start Button > Run > application name ?application names:
access.cpl Accessibility controls
appwiz.cpl Add/Remove Programs
desk.cpl Display properties
hdwwiz.cpl Add hardware
inetcpl.cpl Configure Internet Explorer and Internet properties
intl.cpl Regional settings
main.cpl Mouse properties and settings
main.cpl
mmsys.cpl Sounds and Audio
ncpa.cpl Network properties
nusrmgr.cpl User accounts
powercfg.cpl Power configuration
sysdm.cpl System properties
telephon.cpl Phone and modem options
timedate.cpl Date and time propertiesJust try Start>Run and type in: appwiz.cpl
and click OK to see if your Add/Remove Programs opens up.Tufenuf

I have restarted the computer. The applications can be opened via Start button> run, but can not be accessed via the control panel icons, very annoying! I'm also trying to open windows media. When I double click nothing happens.

Is your User Account that of Administrator ??
Other types of Accounts are limited as to what they can do.

Maybe this relates to your problem--

Found a solution! Went to
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/tool.to.reset.shellopencommand.registry.keys.html. Downloaded: UnHookExec.inf
Followed the instructions and everything is working again. Thanks very much for all your help.famara

Good for you butttttt...
You failed to say in your original post that your Pc suffered worms and Trojans attack. The Symantec link that "cured" your oproblem addresses the attack you had. In the future you will do us and yourself a lot of hair pulling if you provide full information.

You also gave us a bad link. I figured the correct one is...
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/tool.to.reset.shellopencommand.registry.keys.html
It is from this link that you downloaded the file UnHookExec.inf.

XP user, I'm not a computer expert and didn't know my computer was under attack from worms and trojans, as I have McAfee secuity suite, which obviously didn't keep them out. It wasn't until my exe files failed to run earlier today, that I made a search on google to try and rectify the problem. Once again thank you all for your input.
