Try Safe mode.

Corrupted Icons
If the icons on your desktop are corrupted, you can reset them.
Search your system for a file called "IconCache.db". It will be hidden, so you will need to view hidden files to find it. The usual location is Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data.
Once you have found it, delete it and reboot.
If the system will not let you delete it, reboot in to safe mode and do it from there and then reboot again.
When you login again, your icons should be recreated correctly.
This is similar to a trick performed on older operating systems where you delete a file called shelliconcache.
You can also do it with the TweakUI for Windows XP Powertoy, using the repair icons function.

1. Go alt+Ctrl+Delete at the same time and wait for a box to open
2. when the box is open Click "file" at the top and then Click "New Task (Run...)"
3. When you get another small box with something to type in, type in "explorer.exe" (without the ")
4. Your Taskbar and Icons will now load, If not your computer is corrupt.

When my computer boots up there is nothing to be seen except my wall paper. Cont-alt-del just brings up a box that says task manager disabled. I cannot go on the internet, I can't do anything. I can press f8 and open in safe mode with command prompt, that is how I did a recovery, but I do not know what command to enter.

Do you have your XP install CD?

If so, press the key on your keyboard with the Windows logo on it & that will give you access to the > Run box.

Type in there > sfc /scannow & press > Enter.
