I have been to the control panel and found windows installer and started it,it starts and then stops again and comes up with a message that says it stops because it has no work to do ..... where do I go from here?

Go to add/remove programs and look at which version you have. The latest version is 3.1. If you don't have 3.2 then download it from the link I provided. No need to uninstall any older ones.
Installer will only run when you are attempting to install a program.

the windows installer is not in add/remove programs and it is not in the add/remove windows components

You may need to check the box that says " show updates" in add/remove programs.
Download and install the installer from the link I provided above. If 3.1 is already installed it won't install again.

Hi Thanks for your help..... I just checked the box and I have more choices now but.... no "Windows installer" in the list I clicked on a "Windows installer cleanup" and tried to remove that and the "the windows installer service could not be accessed" message came up again its 2.45 am now in the U.K. but im not giving up any other ideas ?? please
