Iam now in bios can anyone with xp talk me through this i need to change to boot so it will do it from the cd rom ,when i have done that where do i go to start to format.

boot with the xp cd, after some setup files load, the option to format /install will appear

I think he also needs to know how to change the boot order. Look through your bios under the various headings to see something that looks like boot order and move your CD-ROM to the top. I don't know what your bios looks like so I can't be more precise.

If you are in BIOS, you should have 5 or some number of tabs across the top. Using the arrow keys select the tab with BOOT in it's name and press ENTER. You should now see at least 4 BOOT entries. Use the arrow key to move to the first boot device, press ENTER, move to CDROM and again press enter. This will make your CD the first boot device. Install you XP CD and press F10 and then select YES to accept the changes. The computer should now shut down, then restart. When you see press any key do so and follow the instructions to install windows.
