then right hand click on c;/ drive and on the pop up menu scroll down to format .... hope this solves your problems...

You can download the owners manual and see how they expect you to recover it. It may have an F key choice at boot to return it. it may have a windows application to return it. It may be that you have to create disks. May be that you can order them for $20 or so.

"...already backed up everything i needed off it..."

... does that mean after a format the other family member will have a laptop with an operating system on it or just a blinking cursor?

... I agree with "jefro" read the book of destructions first! ... lol

You do realize that you cannot format C: from C:.
Second, if you do format the computer you risk loosing the hidden restore partition .

This will leave you with a computer with no disk drive and no way of installing a new OS as you also don't have an xp cd.

The best option is to restore to factory settings option
A Google search "how to restore (your make and model) will save you a lot of headaches.

In simple terms it will format C: from the hidden partition and reinstall a fresh copy of xp.
