get an old computer. XP does not support dos. Even in compatibility mode you cannot select dos. It goes back only as far as 95.

There may be a dos emulator out there somewhere for XP but I haven't looked. If you absolutely cannot do without the old game then you could consider setting up a dualboot system with 98 or ME which have MSDOS inbuilt, but setting this up when XP is already installed is not a straight forward task. Visit www.dougknox.com and look at his XP tips section. This is a lot of effort and carries a degree of risk so if it's only for one game then consider carefully before proceeding. I run a dualboot system and use ME almost exclusively for games as I have quite a few that don't work well with XP. I have the Pro version of XP and understand the Home version has some better gaming functionality. If you are happy about formating and reinstalling then it's easier to set up dualboot when you instal the older OS first. ie: partition your harddrive into two or more partitions. Instal 98 or ME into the C drive then instal XP in the D or other drive. XP automatically configures the dualboot for you. Also a lot of effort for one game but only you know if it's worth it.

Use ctr+alt+del to enter the task manager, select the "Processes" tab, and look for ntvdm.exe. Right click and select the "Set Priority" menu, and select "Low". This should affect how the DOS promt performs. If that doesn't slow stuff down enough, you could try loading more programs.
