i want to back up my computer before i reformat the hard drive. I have 2 hard drives and think my problem is with my master hard drive. Can i just backup my info to the second hard drive or do i have to reformat both. The Slave hd (500 gb) holds, picutres, music, games. And how do i move any files to that drive sucessfully.

you can just copy to the other drive. Programs that are installed cannot be simply copied over they will not work in most cases. You need the installation files for the program or the disks. Otherwise most stuff just copies over as data.

Just be really careful that you format the correct drive. Are you sure you have two drives and not just two partitions on the same physical hard drive?

Report •

If you do have 2 HDDs, I suggest you copy all your important data to the 2nd drive, then disconnect it before you format & reinstall Windows on the primary HDD. This will eliminate any possibility of accidentally formatting the wrong drive.

long story short. took my computer to Staples for the for tune up. Wasnt free after they told me it had virus and cost me $150.00. When i got it back pages wouldnt load example Facebook or Yahoo. I've taken it back to them only to have it be worse. I had Mcafee on it but it wasnt working right so i wanted to change to Kaspersky Anti virus and it wont install. I cant access my system information to get you any details on the service pack im using either. I have done system restores without any resolution to my problems. So i figured the easiest thing to do would be to backup my information and reformat my original master hard drive. Internet explorer doest work either only AOL to connect. What do you think?

Your problems don't sound that bad. I suggest your do some basic things first. If they don't solve the issues then you can always perform a factory restore at that time.

Reboot between each step.

Some questions first. What programs have you added that didn't come originally with the computer? Do you have the installation disks for those programs?

I suggest that you first remove McAfee using the guide linked below.

Next, download and run both the cleaner and registry modules for Ccleaner portable from the link below. When running the registry module I suggest you save a backup when asked. Save to the desktop by changing the path from download to desktop. This is so you can find it easily if needed and so you can discard it when not needed.

Next, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials from the link below.

Next, go to Windows Update and apply the critical updates including internet explorer, which may be a separate download.

Next, go to the Compaq link below and download the latest drivers for your system. The link below should be for your model. Verify before downloading and applying.

If any of these steps cause issues post back before going further.

Now the issues with Internet Explorer. Most of the time inability to go to certain sites is a matter of the security settings. Check the settings in IE and adjust to medium.

If all else fails to remedy your issues then look at the links below.

start, all programs,compaq,tools,sys-recovery

Hope this helps

i have lots of programs that i have added over the years. But not big deal. There is one program which i had that Staples was not supposed to mess with and that is my Keylogger (Soft activity) which is still on my computer but cant get it to load. No big deal on the other programs i dont have cds for almost all of them.

I have already uninstalled mcafee but will do the step again. I did find that when i ran the MSCONFIG that Kaspersky was on my services but it is stopped. But it doesnt show up on the remove programs file under the control panel. And one other thing is that i cannot access my system information by going thru the all programs, accessories to system tool. I can only get there by going thru the control panel. I will be away for a few hours today but will check back when i get home. THank you for your help it is greatly appreciated. one other thing. This computer has been the best machine and hasnt had any work done to it other than staples. I bought it is 2005 and love it. Its a shame i trusted them to begin with.

Remove the remnants of Kaspersky before installing Security Essentials

Add in the use of the link below

Look at the link below too.

Keyloggers are identified as spyware/malware by most programs that look for such things.

If you don't have CDs for third party commercial programs you will be out of luck as far as using those again if you end up restoring to factory state. Freeware programs can just be downloaded again.

The start menu is nothing more than a bundle of shortcuts. As such they can be modified/ added to or removed. Not a big deal.

Evidently Winace is the zip/unzip program you have installed. You do need to have one for those times that a compressed file comes Windows way. My only question would be, WHY NOW?

I am not familiar with MS-Cabinet extension .tab but I am not so sure a third party should be opening it. There are a number of obscure extensions in that list but it really doesn't matter what program handles them.

Which link inside the McAfee link I provided are you using? There are a number of them depending on how you obtained McAfee originally.

I wondered what happened to you.

If you want to start over then explain where your personal files are located. Disk management can be useful at this time. My computer shows you all your partitions with total capacity and free space.

If you compare that information to what you see in Disk Management you can verify where all your stuff is. It is very easy to mix up partitions and then lose data.

If all your personal information is on the second drive, or you copy it to the second drive you can just disconnect the second drive while messing with the first drive.

It has been a while since this thread started so I will remind you that you will lose the installed programs. You stated you didn't have CDs for some of them.

I recommend burning your music to optical disk and also store it on the second hard drive for every day play. CDs for backup. Same for very important files like resumes. Anything that can't be replaced should be on CD/DVD media as well as hard drive. Photos are one type of irreplaceable files.

If I didn't cover everything, just ask.

You should be able to use the media of your choice. Assuming Nero supports that media. In the future place the bleank media in the drive first to avoid that problem.

I just realized what might be happening. You may be using the Nero packet writer which requires CDRW.

You may need to start over with Nero. The name of the regular burning program is usually called Nero burning rom. If you don't have that there is a free version of Nero that will run under newer versions of Windows. Link below.

Are you sure D is your burner drive?

You can use DCR or DVDR. You want to burn a data disk. When you insert a blank disk into your burner Nero should pop up. Select to burn a data disk. Then drag and drop the files to the box in Nero. Watch the capacity bar at the bottom to make sure you don't overfill. You can name the disk anytime before you actually start the burn. If the disk is going to be full then select to finalize the disk when prompted. If not full yet then finalize the session. I recommend you not perform any other tasks while burning your pictures.

After you have finished a disk verify the pictures are actually there and are viewable.

Report •

May 13, 2011 at 05:49:05

So then if you don't like the Nero from the link tell me what the name of the version you have is. Should show on screen when you open it.

You are working yourself up and that just makes things harder.

All the versions work pretty much the same but some versions of Nero come with a packet writer called InCD. That is what I think you tried using earlier. InCD is not the best and as you discovered it wants CDRW. The reason for that is the purpose of InCD is to save files on the fly like you would to a hard drive. So you need rewritable media so when you make changes to a file you can save the file with the changes and not have the original there anymore to confuse you. So, InCD is not the best program to use.

You should also have in the same folder a regular burning program. You need to click on the icons to see what they are. You can always back out. Don't insert a blank disk until you find the selection to make a data disk. The advantage to that is twofold. First, a bar meter at the bottom will show you how much data you can still que up before the full capacity is reached. Second, the disk can be read by most computers.

Where did you get the program you are now trying to use? Is it the Sonic you mentioned? I haven't used Sonic but I think it is for music only. The name implies that.

If you don't want to or can't make DVDs of your personal files you can save them to another hard drive. I can't recall if you have an external or second internal drive available. Do you have all your photos in one folder?

Report •

May 13, 2011 at 21:50:39

boy thats a long question. I tried the nero you suggested. its nero kwik media. Yes i probably am working myself up since ive had nothing but problems since going to staples. The problem is is that i cannot access some of my programs that i used to use. Either they took them out or they wont load. I have both an external hard drive and a second slave hard drive 500 gb. I have tons and tons of pictures not in the same files. I was in the process of scanning all of our family photos dating back 70 yrs so they are all in seperate folders. I would love to just burn all of them to cd to free up space to transfer everything else to the 500 gb hard drive and start over from there. You can perform a search using the start> find and type in this string - *.doc, or *.jpg, *.jpeg, *.pdf.

Get the idea? The askerisk is called a wildcard. The period followed by the file extension for the type of files you want to search for.

You can also click on the title any column when in Windows Explorer to toggle the order of that column. For instance you can order files by name, date, file type, etc. Try it. First click will order in one direction, the second will reverse the order. Can be helpful in finding files. Rather than searching through a long directory you can order things by file type for instance and view them all in the same place.

Keep in mind this only works on files. If you have folders the contents will not show until you open that folder.

I recommend you just copy your entire My Documents folder to the external drive if you have the room.

Just COPY them over for now. If you have TWO places to copy them then I suggest you do that. Don't even worry about the originals. As suggested before, verify the copies are valid.

You mentioned way back that you had programs you didn't have disks for. I suggest you try recovering the installation keys for those programs if you can.

I use a program called SIW that shows that information. SIW is going commercial and the free version may not activate all the features but it is worth a try. Get SIW old free version without installer, from the link below and use it. Under software there is a "licenses" heading.

Im so fustrated by this whole thing. So im supposed to just transfer my pictures to my other drive and not worry about duplicated? im sure i must have a half a dozen of them by now lol

Report •

May 19, 2011 at 01:35:56

Valid copy means did you actually get the photos copied. Open some randomly to verify they are working.

In SIW there is a section labeled licenses. There may be some useful numbers there for some of your installed programs. Write all that stuff down so if you need those numbers later, you will have them.

You are getting worked up again. The important thing about your photos, music, etc is that you have copies that will be safe when you re-install Windows. Later I can tell you about a different program that can help solve the duplicate file problem. Don't worry about them for now unless you are running out of room on the external hard drive. That is where you are copying everything, correct?

Do you know you can copy multiple items at one time? Holding down the Control key while highlighting items will allow you to highlight more than one item at once. After you have highlighted. say all the files on a screen that you want ot copy just right click on any of the highlighted files and choose copy from the drop down list. Then of course at the other end you just choose paste. Hope that didn't confuse you. If it did then just do it like you have been. Using cut can be done too but there is a small risk that if something goes wrong in the middle of the operation you can lose the file/s.

You are hyper because you are getting a crash course in stuff you don't feel comfortable doing.

You don't need to remove IE9. If you want to roll back to IE8 just go to control panel> add/remove programs and remove IE9. You may be prompted about what you want to do. Follow the prompts.

Did you install Mozilla Firefox?

Browsers are stand alone programs. You can have several installed. You will just have an icon for each of them.

When installing Firefox you will be asked if you want to migrate your settings from IE. If you do that, firefox will be messed up too. So, you either need to fix IE or say no when prompted and set up everything manually. Which option you choose depends on how much personalization you currently have in IE.

To install Mozilla Firefox just search for it or use the link below. Then install it like you would any other program. Where folks get into trouble is by NOT reading the screens. Firefox is free so they make their money in various ways. Mostly advertising. But, FF may want to install various things that you don't want and will have a default search engine that you may or may not want to use. Just read.

If this is not enough information just say so. The second link below is for a video. I didn't watch it but I think it may help you understand how to customize FF.
