I think my floppy drive is dead.

My floppy drive stopped reading disks, it gives me a message saying disks need to be formatted. The disks don't need to be formatted, but even if I try it says they can't be and are therefor unusable. I tried to run a scandisk on the drive in it's properties/tools tab and it just makes a noise and closes the scandisk dialog box (without scanning)

Sounds like your floppy disk drive has curled up its toes and died. They do that occasionaly.
Depending how dexterious you are you could try taking the drive out. Removing the cover and cleaning the heads with a bit of methelayted spirit. Depending on how old the disk is you might also be surprised at the amount of accumulated dust in the drive, the absence of which could work wonders.
