i was on my computer the other day
and i had a microsoft window come up
it said that it couldnt detect any virus protection (or something like that)
so i clicked the continue button and it gave me a list of free programmes to download (coming from microsoft i thought i wouldnt have any trouble) i clicked on one to download it said to work correctly i would need to remove spy bot and avg which i did
then it said i need to reboot to get it working which i also did
when it came back on it barely got thru the start up screen ( the black screens) before switching itself off and on which is all it does now goes on for about 20 seconds then restarts
i think i might have been sucked in
is there any way i can fix this problem
any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

Are you talking about the bios screen or the XP start up screen? If it is the bios screen you could try pulling the battery on the motherboard for a couple of minutes or doing the reset jumper on the motherboard.
If you are talking about the XP screen you could try pressing f8 and booting is safe mode then do a system restore or boot to last known good.

Gday domass,
it will go to the blue xp screen for about a couple of seconds till it turns it self off and on again,
i can click on the del button while it is in the black screen(with white text) and go to that other part where all the password settings and things are, it doesnt turn off when i go in there.

ive tried the f8 on the blue xp screen and nothing happens at all so i pulled the battery out for a good ten minutes and that didnt change anything either it only lets me into the cmos utilities setup

If you can't get into it, then you can't fix it.
You can try using your xp cd, go to repair console and type: FIXBOOT. I would also give FIXMBR a shot too.
Failing that, I would boot up with an alternate like BART's PE, get your important files, and then format, reinstall.
And listen... I hate to lecture at this point, but you gotta be a little smarter when surfing the net... when internet pop-ups start telling you to kill your protection layers.... then it's time to kill the pop-up!

definately a malicious program has edited your registry
the bios screens are the ones that display system information (stuff about your hardware) during the bootup process,
it depends on your bios as to exactly what is displayed (mine shows not much at all)
watch your system boot and hit the F8 key on the last bios screen just BEFORE you see anything XP related.
IF you get into safe mode restore to last know good configuration.
i say IF because that piece of nasty software could have disabled the F8 menu.
if you simply cannot get into the boot menu using F8
EITHER take the hard drive out and plug it into another machine and run adaware (or similar) AND an AV package on the drive
or
perhaps the best option
take your computer to a repairer, install lava soft's adaware when you get the computer back (it's free)
can anyone recommend a good AV package too?
i use Trend Miro's PC-cillin myself.B.

Should fix the problem of not detecting AVG
D4Dog
"beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder"

avast.com - anti-virus works just fine... and there's a freebie version too... And unlike AVG there appear to be no issues/problems with any M$ OS; AVG appears (in a recent version) to have some issues with ME - and perhaps other OS too. Been using it almost a year now; updates automatically without problems; is not resource heavy/hog... etc. Wipes the board with Norton/MacAfee etc..
Does sound as though our friend was suckered... Whenever a box pops up saying you have or may have... this problem or that problem.. wise to ignore the accompanying offers of help. Instead... install (if not already there) known/reliable utils and do a thorough check yourself - off-line...
M$-XP "beta" anti-spyware etc. utils is pretty good too these days...

http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/knoppixhks/toc.html
O'Reilly's Linux hacking guide (includes Knoppix on a CD) - would also allow you to boot up from the included CD - and then run a full scan/clean-out of the system. Since the OS at that time is on a CD - it will not be troubled by any pests etc. you may have acquired...
The book and CD are very useful get out of trouble toolkit...

Gee.eff,
If indeed you are getting to the XP blue screen as you say in response #2 then it can't be a problem with your master boot record as blackbill suggests in response #4. Fixboot or Fixmbr will not fix it because if it gets to the XP blue screen it has already gone past them. After your bios screen keep trying to press f8. Do that a couple of times in case your timing is off a bit.If that doesn't work at all then your going to have to put in the XP cd and do a repair install if you want to keep all of your documents and files and stuff that is on the same partition as your operating system. You have a operating system file that is corrupted or missing and when XP trys to load it this is what happens.
Go to WindowsReinstall, to the left is your choice of home or pro link, then to Windows XP(home or pro)repair.

gday all,
i can by continuously pressing F8 get it to start in safe mode but when i get to system restore it wont let me set a date it wont move from 5 february and thats the date i got this
F-Secure PersonalExpress 6.10 build 330 installation (copied from the window on the left in the set date section of system restore)thats what i downloaded in the first place to get into this mess so i,m not to keen to restore it to that date againor can i reload windows from the F8 screen
and if so would it be possible to somehow save the datathanks for the help so far

Two options come to mind...
Slave drive as is to another system and transfer off to removeable media; verify they are readable/accessible...
Then restore drive to its normal home, and rebuild system. Either go for a repair installation (CD boot etc... not via recovery console options). If it fails... then a parallel installation... You will have to (re-)install all apps etc. too. Once it's up and running OK, delete original damaged installation, and clean up the boot.ini.
The other approach - again use the Knoppix (Linux) CD referred to in my earlier post (O'Reilly). That will also allow an acess to all data; allow transfer off the system too... then rebuild etc...
But first see if the Repair approach resolves it all?
At your present stage it is critical to reject any offers to reformat or to otherwise change file format of any partitions(s) - which maybe offered up via XP durng any recovery routines; leave partitions/format(s) as they are...
Once you are in OK... ensure you have a good a/v utils installed etc. (as before I'd favour avast...); and appropriate anti-spyware util(s) too, again the M$ (beta) util is good in this regard... And ensure you have a decent firewall invoked...
Run a full anti-virus/pestware scan of the system once all is running OK.

finally
in the safe mode i couldnt get any further with the system restore so i closed it then still in the safe mode i went to add/remove programmes and removed
F-Secure, turned it all off and restarted and hey presto!
you guys are the greatest thanks very much for all your help :)
