This will give you your public IP address, the one allocated by your ISP. However, if you are accessing the Internet through a router, your computers IP address will be different.

You can find this by typing ipconfig from a Command Prompt.

See the router like the end of the power extention lead with multiple sockets, power in one end and say 4 appliancies connected.

1 Internet, multiple devices attached.

Unless you have an arrangement with your ISP to have a static IP address then you will be allocated an IP address for that session.

When you typed in ipconfig a black box came up and disappeared?

You want to go Start and choose Run [under search]. Type in cmd and hit enter. This will give you a black box command window. Now type in ipconfig and it will show you your address.

you can also download and install
wntipcfg.exe from microsoft, it will install to
"C:\Program Files\Resource Kit" then just make a shortcut for wntipcfg.exe to your desktop.
then just doubleclick it to see your ip.
this looks identical to winipcfg.exe that was available in win95 thru winme. it says for windows
2000 but works ok in xp.
