I got a virus through my cable modem that ruined my Internet Explorer. I wanted to preserve all of my important college files. So I restarted my computer. But now, I cant even log into windows, all I can do is get to the screen where I can choose which profile I want to log in under. Once I choose a profile(Admin., or Owner), my desktop flashes quick and reverts back to that same screen. I REALLY REALLY NEED to save these files, they are EXTREMELY important! PLEASE HELP!!

yeah you can repair the installation, but also to be on the safe side you could put your hdd as slave on another comp (with antivirus) and save to cdrom, then a fresh install would be best. however try the repair first, then post back, to do this just put your xp cd in and boot to cd, u might have to do some bio settings to get this, but boot to cd then do a repair, then post back

I can just reinstall Windows XP from the disk and not lose anything from my hard drive? This would mean that from the repair disk I need to choose the first option?

Thank you.

Last night I went to do the repair install from the CD and all it did was give me a command prompt. What would I have to type in the command prompt to get this to work?

Thanks.

you are following the wrong steps in the install process, this is a bit confusing. there are two different types of repair. the first one(wrong one) it asks you if you want to go to the recovery console. you do not want to choose this. continue past this step. eventually you it will say something about "press R to repair windows on this partition" this is the one you want

Yes, I did that last night. I pressed the 'r' key, and it then asked for an Admin. PW. Immediately after that, it went into the Command Prompt. Is that correct?

Thanks.

BE CAREFULL - if you have an oem (dell, hp, etc) RESTORE cd, you may not be able to run repair. It may overwrite all your files and restore your system to the factory state (including erasing your files). I think you need an actual copy of XP (not just a restore cd).

All I need to know is what command do I type in at the Command prompt that allows me to restore my windows. I already know that I am missing a crucial .dll file. It is called hal.dll. Is there any way that I can install that to my computer through the command prompt?

Thanks.

Several people here have some good advice.
Just make sure which version of Windows XP you have. If it is NOT a PROPRIETERY CD like COMPAQ QUICK RESTORE CD, you should be able to perform a Repair.

I know it may be confusing but when XP asks for the first time if you would like to Repair or Install ... choose INSTALL.

The next time you see this kind of confirmation, it will recognize that you already have XP installed and it will ask you if you want to install a fresh copy or REPAIR the current installaion. This time, choose REPAIR and a SETUP will run that looks pretty much identical to when you first installed XP.

Remember, if you go to the recovery console, you are in the wrong place. Although it is possible to perform a repair from there, I wouldn'y try it. You need to know the commands quite well.

Good LucK!
